Background:  Class A provides a structured introduction to baseball for NWLL’s youngest players. While the focus is primarily on recreation (i.e., scores and standings are not kept), the league emphasizes the development of core skills and understanding of basic concepts of the game commensurate with the players’ age and skill levels to prepare them for the next level of play.

Batters have three (3) total pitches to put the ball in play before an assistant coach/volunteer places a tee on home plate and the batter hits the ball off the tee. While there are no strikeouts, outs may be recorded on batted balls (i.e., force and tag plays, the ball is caught in-flight, and on the bases) and base running. The team at-bat, however, finishes the half-inning by batting around no matter how many outs the team in the field records.

Games are Saturday afternoon and there is one (1) game per week. Teams practice once a week. Games are 3 innings or 1 hour and 15 minutes, whichever comes first.

Teams may be formed by community (i.e., school, church, and neighborhood), with a core group (between five and seven) forming a nucleus with others added to complete the roster. Team size generally varies between 12 and 15.
