Board Member Bios

Karen Gibian

Karen is associate general counsel for tax law at the Investment Company Institute, the leading association representing regulated funds globally, including mutual funds, ETFs and closed-end funds in the US. She advocates for the industry before federal, international, state and local governments and regulators on tax issues that affect funds and their shareholders. Karen has two daughters who play for McLean Youth Soccer, and she has served as a recreation coach for several years.

Elizabeth Kaplan

Elizabeth is a former securities regulatory attorney in private practice. Currently, she volunteers with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Montgoery County, as well as St. Albans School. She has also served on the Board of Governors of Kenwood Country Club and as head of their swim and dive committee for many years. She has been a youth soccer coach and basketball coach. Elizabeth has four children, two of whom have played in the McLean travel and ECNL programs. Elizabeth has served as manager of two different McLean ECNL teams since 2014. 

Brian Luwis

Brian is the CEO of America World Adoption, a 25 year-old child placing agency that has served thousands of families, including his own. He remains actively involved with his family's real estate development business founded by his father, a first-generation American born to a poor immigrant family from Yugoslavia. He serves America World Adoption as unpaid CEO and for his "tent making" income, he manages his families' commercial properties in McLean and Falls Church. He previously served on the MYS Governance Committee and also played for MYS back in the seventies!

Nancy McGuire Choi

Nancy McGuire Choi is a social sector executive with 15 years of experience in international development, technology innovation and organizational development. Nancy is the Chief Operating Officer at Polaris, an international non-profit organization that uses data-driven strategies to disrupt and prevent human trafficking. Nancy is a volunteer coach and has two children in the MYS program.

Susan Mrachek

Susan currently serves as the Director of Volunteer Engagement with AARP, a national non-profit organization with 60,000 volunteers who help AARP carry out its mission. Susan has played the sport of soccer from her youth to Division 3 college to present-day where she plays in the Fairfax Women's Soccer Association League. She has over 10 years' experience with MYS as volunteer coach and parent of three children that went through the MYS Recreational Program. Susan brings the following skills to the Board: Communications, Strategic Planning, Digital Marketing, Business Development, and Relationship Building.

Michele Reing

Michele currently serves as the Corporate Controller with the Carlyle Group and oversees worldwide accounting operations for the firm (about 90 people) with teams in the US, London, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Brazil. Michele has two children who have played in MYS Recreation, Juniors, and Travel (CCL & ECNL) programs over the past ten years. Michele brings the following skills to the Board: Finance and Accounting, Strategic Planning, Change Management, Active Listening and Problem Solving, and Governance.

Matthew D. Shank, Ph.D.

Dr. Shank is the President of the Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges (VFIC).  Prior to this he served as the interim President of the World Affairs Council – DC and became Marymount University’s sixth president in July 2011 and stepped down to become President Emeritus in June 2018.  He currently serves on a variety of non-profit boards including: Arlington Free Clinic, Arlington Public Schools, Arlington Street Peoples Assistance Network, Dream Project, Leadership Center for Excellence, Northern Virginia Community College Foundation, 4Stay, and the Washington Area Women’s Foundation. Dr. Shank has published numerous articles, presented at many conferences, and is the author of the book Sports Marketing: A Strategic Perspective (5th Edition). He has consulted with over 75 organizations in the areas of marketing research, strategic planning, and marketing strategy.  Matt and his wife Lynne have twin ’07 daughters (Grace – ECNL and Olivia – Rec) who both reap the many and varied benefits of MYSA.
