Former MYS Players Excel in College Soccer in 2019

McLean Youth Soccer saw 72 of its former female ECNL players compete in collegiate soccer during the 2019 season, playing for a total of 54 different teams across 25 different NCAA conferences (see the table below for a complete list of players and schools). Conference play and postseason tournaments wrapped up the weekend of Nov. 9-10 and a total of 19 players from 14 schools will continue competing in the upcoming NCAA Division 1 and Division 3 Championships.

Taken as a group, McLean players made an impressive contribution to college soccer in 2019: 72 McLean alumni played in a total of 940 games, starting 585 of those matches, scoring 62 goals (20 of them game winners) and adding 76 assists. Six of the teams with MYS players on their roster won their Conference title (For D1 that included Brown, Hofstra, North Carolina, and Penn State, and for D3 that included Amherst and John Hopkins). Several schools that did not claim Conference titles will still advance to the D1 or D3 NCAA postseason tournament due to the strength of their records and the competitiveness of their Leagues (these include: Carnegie Mellon, Duke, Florida, Georgetown, Tufts, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Wisconsin).

Multiple players garnered All-Conference honors (this may not be a complete list since a few conference have not yet reported honors):

  • Macy Monticello, a stalwart defender for the Wisconsin Badgers, started every game (19 total) and helped her team to ten clean sheets. As a result, she was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team.
  • Jordan Silkowitz, who had a standout season between the posts for Ohio State, started 18 games, made 58 saves and allowed a goals-against average of 0.99. She was also named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team (she played as a redshirt freshman in 2019).
  • Freshman Angela Caloia started all 16 games for the Harvard Crimson and led her team in points (23), with six goals (two of them game-winners) and a whopping 11 assists. She was twice named Ivy League Rookie of the Week and also garnered Player of the Week honors during the season and ended her 2019 campaign with All-Ivy Second Team honors. Caloia led the Ivy League in assists and was ranked fourth nationally in assists per game (0.69).
  • Julia Leas started every game at Georgetown (20 thus far, with the NCAA tournament yet to be tallied). She scored four goals (one game winner) and added four assists for the Hoyas, earning her a spot on the Big East All-Freshman team.
  • Elizabeth Zhou started 16 of 16 games for D3 Wellesley in her sophomore year, notching two goals (two game winners) and an assist, as well as a spot on the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference Team.
  • Kimberly Zhou, a sophomore defender for the Amherst Mammoths, made the NESCAC All-Conference team by starting all 18 games for her team and helping propel them to a conference title and automatic bid for the NCAA Division 3 Soccer Tournament.
  • Senior Madison Hammond closed out her college career in fine form in 2019: she started in 18 games for Wake Forest, scoring three goals (one game winner), adding four assists, and winning All-ACC Second Team and CoSIDA Academic All-District honors.
  • Sophomore Maria Pareja had a stellar sophomore campaign for George Washington. She started 20 of the 21 games she played in, scoring six goals (four game winners), contributing four assists, and claiming a spot on the Atlantic-10 Second Team. During the season she also won Player of the Week honors and tied for the Second Leading Scorer on her team.
  • Senior Goalkeeper Lydia Erickson started in 19 matches for Hood College, which will be competing in the postseason 2019 Division III ECAC Championship. She was named to the All-MAC Commonwealth Honorable Mention Team.
  • Senior Marissa Ferrantino was named to the SoCon All-Tournament Team after playing defense for all 20 matches on behalf of UNC Greensboro in 2019. Over the course of her college career, Ferrantino played in 82 matches, starting in all but two of them.
  • Senior Goalkeeper Erica Sanders started in nine of 12 matches for NCAA D# Tournament-bound Amherst in 2019, and she earned NESCAC Player of the Week honors after performing well in one key match.
  • Senior defender and returning Team Captain Emily Roche capped off an outstanding career at D3 Washington and Lee University by starting 17 of 19 games and being named to the All-ODAC First Team. She helped her team achieve 13 shutout victories in 2019.
