National, American, Brunswick, Emmitsburg win
Defending champion Frederick National, Frederick American, Brunswick and Emmitsburg won while Westminster, East Frederick, Middletown and Thurmont lost in District II Little League action Tuesday night. The double elimination tournament continues today with Emmitsburg at Frederick National, Frederick American at Brunswick, East Frederick at Middletown and Westminster at Thurmont.  All games start at 6 p.m.
FN 6, Westminster 2
WESTMINSTER — Jerry Kephart went two-for-three with three runs batted in and pitched a six-hitter to lead Frederick National to a 6-2 victory over Westminster in the first round of the District II Little League Tournament, Tuesday evening. Kephart limited Westminster to single runs in the first and six innings and he struck out nine while walking five to earn the complete game victory. Westminster took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Frederick came back with a single run in the second and added another in the third on a solo home run by J.R. Hill. Frederick National increased its lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth when Greg Blough drove in one run with a single and Frederick National scored another run on an error by the Westminster right fielder. The Frederick team added two more runs in the fifth to secure the win. Scott Thomson was the losing pitcher. He gave up eight hits, walked two and struck out nine. Richie Lambert went two-for-three to lead the Westminster attack. Frederick committed three errors

Brunswick, National remain undefeated
Brunswick and Frederick National remained unbeaten while Thurmont and Middletown suffered their second losses and were eliminated in District II Little League action Wednesday. Meanwhile East Frederick and Westminster won their first games in the districts and Frederick American and Emmitsburg lost their first games. In action Friday, Frederick National is at Brunswick, Emmitsburg at East Frederick and Westminster at Frederick American.
NL 9, Emmitsburg 7
One big inning was all the Frederick National Little League needed in its District II game against Emmitsburg, Wednesday night at Staley Stadium. The city team scored eight of its nine runs in the second inning to take a 9-3 lead and then held on to beat Emmitsburg,  9-7. The win means the Nationals are now 2-0 in district play while Emmitsburg falls to 1-1. It was a far cry from last year's district game between two at Staley, when the Nationals romped, 20-6. This year Emmitsburg just kept coming back and had the tying run at the plate in the sixth inning. But the NL's big second inning proved too much for the northern county team to overcome. Frederick sent 12 men to the plate in the inning and scored its eight runs on six hits and four Emmitsburg errors. Thanks to a three-run homer by Doug Orndorff in the first, Emmitsburg went into the bottom of the second leading 3-1. But three errors, a single by Wayne Millberry and a double by Larry Routzahn allowed the Frederick team to score four runs with only one out to take a 5-3 lead. Frank Randolph then clouted a two-run home run deep over the leftfield fence to make it 7-3 After a double by Dale Winpigler, starting pitcher Kevin Damuth was pulled and relieved by Chad Topper. But Jerry Kephard hit Topper's first pitch over the right field fence for another home run to give the host team a 9-3 lead. Topper then pitched out of the inning and his teammates started to come back. They scored twice in the fourth on a double by Tony Andrew, an error and a single by Dave Vinson. Then in the fifth Topper hit a two-run homer to close the margin to 9-7 Emmitsburg got the lead off man on base in the sixth, but National League pitcher Chris Helms retired the next three men, two by strikeouts. The Nationals had scored their first run in the first inning on singles by Randolph and Winpigler. Randolph, Winpigler, Kephart and Millberry each had two hits for the Nationals. Vinson and Andrew had two for the losers. Helms got the win, allowing eight hits and fanning seven. Topper allowed three hits and one unearned run in 3 innings of relief.

Brunswick drops National, 8-2
BRUNSWICK —The first two innings told the whole story: Brunswick took a 7-0 lead, with four runs coming on home runs, and Frederick National committed four errors. Brunswick went on to win the game easily, 8-2, to remain the only undefeated team in the District II Little League Tournament, Friday night before a packed crowd at Marvin E. Younkins Memorial Park in Brunswick. It was the first loss of the double elimination tournament for Frederick National, which is now 2-1 in tournament play. The other two district games scheduled for Friday night were postponed because of inclement weather and will be played today. Emmitsburg travels to East Frederick at 2 p.m. and Westminster is at Frederick American at 6 p.m. this evening. The victory Friday sent Brunswick into next Friday's championship game. Frederick National, meanwhile, will play again next Wednesday. The double elimination tournament continues on Monday, when the winners of Saturday's game's will meet at 6 p.m. at a site to be determined later. On Friday, Brunswick got off to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first as Robbie Daugherty led off with a home run over the left centerfield fence and two other runs scored on a single by John Fowler and three Frederick National errors. "Anytime you can get up two or three runs before the other team gets to bat, it's an edge," said Brunswick manager Ernie Bitler. "That's what we were trying to tell the kids before the game: get on top early." Brunswick stretched that lead 7-0 in the top of the second on two walks, an RBI single by John Fowler and a three-run homer over the left field foul pole by Jeff Walden. The only other Brunswick run came in the third on a double by Kevin Myers and two Frederick National errors. After that, Frederick National settled down and committed only one error the rest of the way, and National starter Frank Randolph allowed only one more Brunswick hit. He gave up six hits all together. "We were tight," Frederick National manager Ike Rhoderick said of his team's early errors. "But we were beaten by a good ball club." He praised the pitching of Randolph. "After his players started playing behind him and making the routine plays that they weren't making in the first couple of innings, he was all right." Calvin Brewster and Todd Wenner combined on a six-hitter for Brunswick. Brewster started and went four innings before giving way to Wenner, who gave up two hits over the last two innings. Brewster gave up the only two National runs in the fourth on a two-run home run to right center by Dale Winpigler. Brewster and Wenner also benefitted from Brunswick's strong defensive play. After committing his team's only error on a tough play in left field, Brunswick's Brian Green ended a National threat in the first when he made a running catch of a fly to left center and fired to first to double off the runner. Right fielder Kevin Myers also turned in a defensive gem in the fourth when he reached far over the fence to catch a line-drive foul. And National first baseman Larry Routzahn also played well in infield, snaring a line drive hit just to his left and then hanging over the fence to catch a pop foul. Walden led Brunswick with two hits and three RBIs. Daugherty, Fowler, Randy Brown and Myers had the other Brunswick hits. Frank Randolph had two hits for National and Winpigler, Jerry Kephart, Wayne Millberry and Matt Hoffman had one each. Brewster walked two and struck out one in his four innings of work; Wenner struck out one and walked none. For Frederick National, Randolph walked two and struck out five.

NOTES — Emory Frye, the District H Administrator, said Friday night that the state Little League tournament this year will be double elimination for the first time. Frye said he was contacted by state officials on Thursday about the change. The state tournament will be held in Salisbury, starting Aug. 3.

Westminster tops National
Todd Sadowski singled in the winning run in the top of the sixth as Westminster rallied to beat Frederick National, 6-5, in the District II Little League Tournament, Wednesday evening at Staley Stadium. With two out in the sixth, Ted Sadowski hit a line-drive single to center. Todd Sadowski followed with a sharp hit past the second baseman. The ball took a bad hop at the edge of the outfield grass and rolled into center, enabled Ted Sadowski to score from first with the winning run. The loss was Frederick National's second straight and knocked the city team out of the double elimination tournament. Westminster — its only loss a 6-2 setback to Frederick National in the tournament opener — now faces Brunswick on Friday at 6 p.m. at Westminster. Brunswick is undefeated. If Brunswick wins Friday's game, it takes the district title and advances to the state Little League tournament starting in Salisbury next Monday. If Brunswick loses on Friday, another game between Westminster and Brunswick will be played Saturday to determine the district champion. The two teams have not yet met in the districts. Against Frederick National on Wednesday, Westminster had to rally from a 4-0 deficit with five runs in the top of the fifth. In that fifth inning, National starter Jerry Kephart walked the first two Westminster batters. After a force at third for one out, Tommy Fritz drove in one run with a bad hop single over the shortstop's head. Scott Thompson followed with a line-drive home run over the right field fence to score three runs, tying the game at 4-4. After another out, Rich Lambert hit a sinking liner to National left fielder Wayne Millberry, who reached over the fence and got his glove on the ball, only to have the ball drop on the wrong side of the fence. The home plate umpire ruled it a home run, giving Westminster a 5-4 lead. National came back with one run in the bottom of the fifth when Frank Randolph scored from first on a line-drive double to center by Dale winpigler. But Todd Sadowski's game-winning RBI in the top of the sixth put Westminster up again, and Westminster starter Mark Wanken retired National in order in the bottom of the sixth for the victory. Wanken gave up all five National runs on four hits, struck out five and walked only two. Only one of the National runs was earned. Kephart allowed the six Westminster runs on six hits, struck out three and walked five. National took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first on two hits and four Westminster errors. Those four errors were the only miscues committed by either team the whole game. After National's J.R. Hill led off and reached first on an error by the second baseman, he took second on a passed ball, advanced on a ground out and scored on another passed ball. Frank Randolph singled to center and Dale Winpigler then reached first on another error. Kephart followed with a single back through the pticher's box to score Randolph, making it 2-0. Winpigler then scored on an error by the catcher, and, after Millberry walked Kephart scored on a ground out by Chris Helms.Wanken did not let the mistake-filled first inning bother him, as he then held National hitless until Hill led off the fifthwith a single.Kephart, meanwhile, allowed one Westminster hit in the second and got into trouble in the third when he walked the first three batters. But three nice defensive plays by National second baseman Matt Hoffman got Kepbaft out of the jam. No player on either team had more than one hit. For Westminster, Ted Sadowski, Todd Sadowski, Fritz, Thompson, Matt Bair and" Lambert had the hits. For National, Hill, Randolph, Winpigler and Kephart had the only hits.

Little League Districts start Monday
The District II Little League Tournament begins Monday, but the tourney will be operating with one less team than last year. Middletown, which hit been in the District II tourney for the past three years, has decided to pull out of sanctioned Little League baseball this year. But, meanwhile, six other sanctioned teams will be in action at 6 p.m. today. Defending district and state champion Brunswick hosts Frederick American, East Frederick visits Frederick National and Thurmont hosts Emmitsburg. Westminster, the seventh team in District II, has drawn a first-round bye with the absence of Middletown, and plays the Emmitsburg-at-Thurmont winner Wednesday at a site to be determined later. The district tournament is double elimination and will continue through July 30. The district champion advances to the Section I tournament at Brunswick, Aug. 3-8, and that winner, plays for the state title Aug. 12-14 at LaPlata. Middletown first came into national affiliation in 1979, but Mike Duffy, the league's president, said Thursday that it decided to withdraw from the national sanction so the league could extend its regular season. Regular sanctioned Little League seasons end around June 30 and at that time, the tournament teams are selected for district play. "We felt we could play more baseball out of sanctioned Little League," Duffy explained. "This way, we could play more kids and our season would continue. "Under national rules, you can only field one all-star team for the tournament," Duffy continued. "This year, we have already sent an all-star team to a tournament in Charles Town, W. Va. and we sent two teams to a tournament in the Walkersville area. We wanted the kids to get a little more playing time." The idea of possibly becoming affiliated with the new Bambino (8-12) Babe Ruth League program has come up in the Middletown area, Duffy noted, but nothing has been decided.

National LL downs EF, 2-1
Kevin Brown ripped a bases-loaded double with two out in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Frederick National a 2-1 victory over EF Frederick, Tuesday in the first round of the District II Little League playoffs, at Staley Stadium. National will now play defending state champion Brunswick, today at Staley Stadium. EF Frederick will be at home against Frederick American, and Thurmont is at Westminster. All games start at 6 p.m. Emmitsburg received a bye and will not play again until Friday in the double elimination tournament, East Frederick and Frederick American all have one loss in the tournament. National had loaded the bases with none out in the sixth inning and the score tied.  Nathan Milberry led off with a single to right Butch Rhoderick and Scott Hendrickson followed with perfect bunt singles East Frederick starter Chris Tacik then struck out Greg Blongh. Pete Rinehart hit a fielder's choice grounder back to Tacik, who threw to the plate to retire Millberry. That set the stage for Brown's game-winning hit, a line drive over the left fielder's head. Milberry was the winning pitcher, allowing only three hits, striking out eight and walking five. Tacik gave up seven hits — four of those coming in the sixth — struck out nine and walked six. East Frederick took a 1-0 lead in the first when John Mangold walked, Danny Marti singled, Keith Bowie walked and Jim McBride singled to drive in Mangold. The home team tied the score in the bottom of the second. Tacik, who had control problems through the second and third innings, issued a one-out walk to Bubby Shankle. Shankle advanced on an error by the shortstop and took third on a wild pitch He then scored when, with two outs, Tacik issued a bases-loaded walk to Scott Hendrickson National loaded the bases again m the third, but an alert play by East Frederick catcher John Mangold nailed Brown as he attempted to score from third on a wild pitch. Neither team threatened again until the sixth In the top of the inning, East Frederick's Jim McBnde slammed a one-out double to deep center field Millberry then walked Jay Crummitt But McBnde was out at third on Scott Blackburn's grounder, and Tacik struck out for the final out. Both teams received outstanding fielding plays Millberry made a fine bare-handed grab of a grounder i the fourth inning for National. For East Frederick, Mangold fielded a grounder in front of the plate in the fourth for one out and in the fifth, second baseman Gerald Darner went to his left to stop a hard shot and flipped to first for the out. Tacik also played well defensively until he was shaken by National's two straight bunt hits in the bottom of the sixth Darnell Whims of National was the only player with two hits.

Brunswick, EF, Westminster win in district LL action
Brunswick, East Frederick and Westminster won while Frederick National, Frederick American and Thurmont lost in second round District II Little League action, Wednesday.

Brunswick 7, FN 4
Hark Walden's two-run single highlighted Brunswick's four-run third inning as the defending state Little League champions went on to beat Frederick National, 7-4, at Staley Stadium. Brunswick, with two wins in the double elimination tournament, now hosts Westminster Friday in the winners' bracket. Westminster, 1-0, beat Thurmont on Wednesday, 2-1. Frederick National, now 1-1, falls into the losers' bracket and will play at Emmitsburg (0-1), also 6 p.m. on Friday. Against Frederick National, Brunswick broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the third and then added single insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings. In the third inning, Jason Cooper, Randy Brown and Randy Feaster hit consecutive singles before Walden scored Cooper and Brown with his hit. Feaster and Walden later scored on an error by the shortstop. The 5-1 lead turned out to be enough for Brunswick. National closed the score to 5-4 in its half of the third when Brunswick starter Jason Cooper couldn't find the plate. He walked the first two batters Pete Rinehart and Kevin Brown and Rinehart then scored on an error by the first baseman. Three more walks accounted for two more National runs. Randy Feaster finally relieved Cooper, immediately got the last out of the inning, and pitched shutout ball the rest of the way. He ran into trouble in the fourth, giving up three hits, but got out of the inning with two key strikeouts. Cooper gave up three hits, struck out three and walked six. Feaster allowed three hits, struck out six and walked none. Randy Brown paced the Brunswick offense with three hits, including an RBI bad-hop single it the sixth that drove in his team's final run. Brunswick's single run in the fourth came when Brent Beachley led off with a single, advanced on a walk,  took third on a wild pitch and scored on an error by the catcher. Beachley and Waldon had two hits each for Brunswick. Rinehart picked up the loss for Frederick National He went the distance, giving up 11hits, walking three and striking out two. Rinehart  was also his team’s leading hitter with an RBI double in the first and a single in the third. National took a 1-0 lead in the first as Scott Hendrickson led off with a double and Greg Blough followed with a single.  Rinehart then drove in Hendrickson with his Double. Brunwsick made it 1-1 in the top of the second. Matt Berger walked, advanced on a ground out and scored on an Error by the center fielder.

District LL play
FN, Thurmont, Westminster win
Westminster downed Brunswick to remain unbeaten, Frederick National beat
Emmitsburg and Thurmont defeated East Frederick in district 11 Little League action Friday.

FN13, Emmitsburg 10
EMMITSBURG - Butch Rhoderick ripped a three-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to break a 10-10 tie and give Frederick National a 13-10 win over Emmitsburg in the District II Little League playoffs on Friday. The loss eliminated Emmitsburg from further play in the tournament. Frederick National will now play Thurmont at Thurmont on Monday at 6p.m. Rhoderick's homer ended a wild game that saw each team blow leads. Emmitsburg got on the board first, with a two-run first inning and 1 single run in the third. However, FN scored 10 times in a marathon fourth inning to give them a seemingly insurmountable, 10-3, lead. Emmitsburg did not give up. The county team scored one run in their half of the fourth and then tied the game with a six-run inning that carried the game into extra innings. Both teams threatened in the seventh inning, but neither team could score. In the National eighth, Gary Blough led off with a base hit to right field. After Emmltsburg's pitcher, Eddie Joy, retired the next two batters, Jay Wastler reached base on an infield hit, moving Blough to second base. Rhoderick then roped Joy's first pitch over the right field fence, some 190 feet away. Bobby Shankle retired the Emmitsburg batters in the eighth without much trouble. Emmitsburg appeared to have the game in order, taking a 3-0 lead and riding the one-hit pitching of starting hurler Vince Reaver into the fourth inning. However, that is when the Frederick bats woke up and Reaver's arm wore down. Reaver allowed two hits, two walks and a hit batsman to key the Frederick uprising. Reaver allowed five runs, before Joy was inserted on the mound in relief. Joy, who had been playing third base, was little rusty at start. He allowed the other five Frederick runs in the inning on two hits, a walk and two botched fielder's choice plays. From that point until the Rhoderick home ran, Joy held FN scoreless and struck out six. Emmitsburg tied the game in the last of the sixth. Four hits, two errors, a walk and a hit batsman contributed to the late inning rally. Mark Topper had a two-run pinch-hit single and DJ Short had a two-run double in the big inning. The big Emmitsburg inning knocked out starting Frederick pitcher Scott Henderickson. Shankle came in and held on to the tie, striking out the last two Emmitsburg batters to kill the threat. Emmitsburg out hit the Frederick team, 13-10. Vince Reaver had a solo home run for Emmitsburg in the third inning. Dave Mort had a triple for the losers. Rhoderick led the winners with two hits, including his home run.

FN tops Thurmont in LL play
THURMONT - Frederick National rallied from a 2-1 deficit to tie the score in the top of the fifth inning, scored the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth and then stranded a potential tying Thurmont run at first base in the last of the sixth to preserve a 3-2 win in the District in Little League Tournament, Monday evening. The win means that Frederick National will now host Brunswick at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the second round losers bracket competition and the winner of that game faces unbeaten Westminster at 6 p.m. Friday. Thurmont is eliminated from the district tourney with its second loss. Frederick National took a 1-0 lead in the second innings thanks to a Thurmont error. But the host team scored twice in the fourth on RBI singles by Chris Little and Mark Euhn. Frederick came back with a single run in the fifth on an RBI single by Greg Blough. He scored Bubby Shankle who has reached on an infield hit. The winners took the lead to stay in the top of the sixth when Darnell Whims led off with a double to left-center field and Pete Rinehart singled him on a shot to center field on the next play. The host team had a chance to tie the score in the last of the sixth. With two out Kevin Rippeon hit a sharp single to center field. But Frederick National pitcher Rinehart fanned the next batter to strand Rippeon on first and end the game. Rinehart had a good pitching performance for Frederick National. He allowed five hits while fanning seven and walking only one. Whims was the leading hitter for Frederick National with two hits, including his double in the sixth. Shankle also had a pair of hits for the winners. For Thurmont, Rippeon was the starting pitcher and be pitched until the fifth when he was relieved by Eric Royer. Royer made it through the fifth, but he failed to retire a batter in the sixth and Tom Fraley finished the game. The pitching trio for Thurmont gave up six hits, struck out seven and walked three. Al Bare had the only extra base bit of the game for Thurmont. He had a double in the last of the fourth. Chris Little and Mark Kuhn each drove in a run for Thurmont in the fourth.

Brunswick defeats NL in district LL action
Randy Feaster hit two of his team's four home runs to lead Brunswick to an 8-3 win over Frederick National in the District II Little League Tournament, Wednesday at Staley Stadium. The win means Brunswick will now play at unbeaten Westminster Friday. If Westminster wins, the Carroll County team will capture the district crown. If Brunswick wins, the same two teams will meet in the title game Saturday. Brunswick looked like a small version of the Milwaukee Brewers as home runs accounted for all but one run. Feaster led the power parade with a two-run homer in the fourth and a three run shot in the fifth. He also went the distance on the mound, but it was his hitting that highlighted the Brunswick win. He came up to the plate with a man on first and the score tied 2-2 in the fourth inning and clouted the ball deep over the leftfield fence. Then, in the fifth inning with two men on base and his team ahead 5-3, he hit the ball over the left field fence again to put the game out of reach. Brunswick had scored its initial run in the first inning when Brent Beachley hit a solo shot over the left field fence. The ball just barely went over the fence. But, the Nationals tied the game in the first on singles by Greg Blough, Darnell Whims and Kevin Brown. The host team then went ahead with a run in the second on singles by Nathan Millberry, Scott Hendrickson and Blough. But, in the top of the fourth, leadoff man Randy Brown tied the game for Brunswick with a solo home run. After a walk, Feaster followed with his two-run shot. The Nationals got a run in the fourth on three errors. But Brunswick came back with four runs in the fifth, three on Feaster's homer and another on a double by Beachley and a single by Brown. The Frederick team had numerous opportunities to score in the game, but stranded 11 batters. The host team had the bases loaded with one out in the third, but Feaster fanned the next two men. They had all seven of their hits in the first three innings. Feaster fanned seven and walked five as he got stronger as the game went along.

Brunswick, NL win in district play
NL 5, Thurmont 3
THURMONT — A weakening David Allen found some hidden reserve in the sixth inning Monday night and because of it, his Frederick National Little League team was able to get past Thurmont, 5-3, in the opening round of the District II Little League Tournament - Allen, who struck out six of the first nine batters he faced in the contest, surrendered two of Thurmont's three runs in the sixth and found himself staring at the lead run at the plate with one out. The hard-throwing right hander reached back and got Brian Fraley and Herb Crimm on strikes to end the threat and guarantee the victory. Allen's only mistake until the sixth was an ill-advised change-up to Thurmont left fielder Mike Reid in the fourth. Reid hopped on that toss for a homer to center to cut the Frederick National lead to 3-1. Earlier, Thurmont starter Jim Black got into the same problem as Darnell Whims knocked his change-up to center for a single in the first to plate the first run of the game. Frederick came back with two more in the third as shortstop Lance Dixon hit a Black pitch to the gap in left-center to knock in two runs and send the Thurmont hurler off the mound. Frederick got the eventual game winning tallies in the fifth off Grimm. Whims and Jay Wastler hit back-to-back doubles to account for the first run and Matt Smith foaled off at least a half dozen Grimm tosses before doubling home the fifth run of the game. The Thurmont last-ditch rally began when Stevie Messner walked to begin the sixth. He went to second as Tim Kelly flew out to fairly deep right and scored when the right fielder couldn't handle Reid's single. Elliott Smith was safe at first when he hit a grounder to short and the first baseman stepped off the base as he took the throw. Brad Sanders then blooped a run-scoring hit in short right field to score pinch runner Jim Miller, making it 5-3 with runners on first and second. That set the stage for Allen's late surge of strikeout power. Both teams turned neat double plays in the contest. Thurmont escaped further damage in the first inning when Grimm picked off Wastler's low liner with Whims on first and easily doubled Whims off. Frederick returned the favor in the fifth when Allen fielded Black's slow bounding ball to the mound, fired to Olson at second and the shortstop fired a perfect strike to first to nip Black. Allen finished the game with 11 strikeouts and three walks, while allowing five hits. In three innings of relief work, Grimm had three strikeouts, three walks and he gave up seven hits. Whims and Tim Boyer each had two hits for the winners and every starter in the line-up got on base at least once. Reid and Sanders had two hits each for Thurmont.

NL remains unbeaten in district
Frederick National is the only unbeaten team in the District II Little League Tournament. The city team downed previously unbeaten Emmitsburg, 14-5, on Friday at Frederick for its third win. The tournament continues Monday with Westminster at Brunswick. The winner of that plays Emmitsburg on Wednesday. Frederick National then meets the winner of Wednesday's game on Friday. If the NL wins, the tournament is over. If the city team loses, another game will be played Saturday.

NL 14, Emmitsburg 5
The hitting of Lance Dixon led the Frederick National Little League to its 14-5 win over Emmitsburg. Dixon, the second batter in the lineup, hit more like a clean-up hitter with four hits including a home run, a triple and two singles. He drove in five runs, four with clutch hits in the first two innings when the NL broke the game open, end scored three times. In the first inning Dixon clouted a two run homer over the center-field fence to give National a 2-0 lead. Then, in the second inning, be singled with the bases loaded to drive in the third and fourth runs of the game. In the third inning he drove in a fifth run with a long triple to right Darnell Whims pitched a two-hitter for the winners, but he got himself into trouble by walking eight men and hitting another. One of the hits off him was a infield single and the other a solid single by Don Kaas in the fifth inning Jason Davis also had a key three-run homer for Frederick to highlight an eight-run second inning Frederick only managed two hits in the second, but was aided by five walks and an error. Two Emmitsburg pitchers walked nine men in the game. The NL took a 2-0 lead on Dixon's homer in the top of the first but in the bottom of the inning Tom Little hit a pop fly bunt just over Whims' head. By the time the infielder reached the ball Little was on first He later scored on an error. But the National League then scored its eight runs in the second. Dixon drove in two with his single, Davis three with his homer with the other three runs scoring on a passed ball, stolen base and an error. The NL added another run in the third on Dixon's triple and three in the fifth on three walks and singles by Jerome Patterson and Dixon. Emmitsburg scored twice in the fourth on two walks and an error and twice in the sixth on four walks and a hit batsman. Patterson played an exceptional game at third for the NL coming up with several key defensive plays.

NL wins district LL crown
WESTMINSTER — Not having played a game since last week didn't hurt Frederick National In its 13-4 win over Westminster in the District II Little League championship. Friday, Frederick National played with just as much intensity as it had last week when it beat Westminster, 9-3. The district champions got 13 hits off two Westminster pitchers, winning pitcher David Allen scattered seven Westminster hits and National committed just one error. Frederick national advances to the Section I Little League tourney, starting Wednesday, at Halfway Park in Washington County. National will play the District champion from Baltimore City at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday in the double elimination tourney. Frederick manager Ike Rhoderick wasn't really sure what would happen because of the week layoff, but it only took his team two innings for him to find out. The winners hit three home runs during those initial innings and took a 5-1 lead. "We really came out swinging," Rhoderick said after the game. "We were really hitting the ball good and getting the runs when we needed them. It was just a good team effort. "We had consistent hitting all through our lineup," Rhoderick said. "The thing we have to do is keep it up." "This is the best Little League team in District II," Westminster manager Jim Spangler told Rhoderick. "You did everything well." Spangler was right. Frederick National did just about everything to near perfection, both on offense and defense. One of the most relaxed players on the Frederick National team was Allen. Allen only threw 88 pitches during the game, gave up seven hits, struck out three and walked three. "David had a good game pitching," Rhoderick said. "He had about two weeks off. He hasn't pitched since the first game of the district tournament." Frederick National got plenty of hitting from Matt Smith, who had three hits in four plate appearances. Darnell Whims led the team in RBIs with three, coming on a three-run homer in the top of the first. He also had two hits. Jason Davis had two hits in four tries and drove in two runs and Lance Dixon and Allen also had two hits each. Frederick National took a quick 3-0 lead in the first on Whims' three-run homer and back-to-back solo homers by Allen and Robbie Bowins in the second gave the winners a 5-0 lead. Frederick got two runs in the third on an RBI single by Davis and a wild pitch to lead 7-1. The big inning for Frederick was the fourth. Behind a two-run single by Davis, a sacrifice fly by Dixon, a hit batter with the bases loaded and two Westminster errors, Frederick led 12-1. Westminster scored once in the second on a one-run single by Mike Reiser, twice in the fourth on a two-run homer by Mike Stoner and an RBI single by Scott Mancha in the fifth. Mancha led Westminster with three hits. "We came out today with the right frame of mind and we need to stay in it for the sectionals," Rhoderick added.

Frederick National falls to Forest Park
HALFWAY — Seven wild pitches by the Frederick National pitcher, coupled with a four-hitter by Forest Park's Charlie Smith, gave the District III Little League champions a 4-3 win over Frederick National in the opening round of the Section I Tournament, Wednesday. The loss, Frederick National's first in Little League tournament play this year, puts the District II champions into the loser's bracket of the double elimination tourney. Frederick will meet Valley, a 10-1 loser to Rising Sun, today in a losers bracket game at 1:30 p.m. at Halfway Park. Forest Park is in the winner's bracket of the tourney and plays the Valley- Rising Sun winner, at 6 pm . today. Frederick pitcher Darnell Whims, at first looked like he was in good shape, retiring the first three batters for Forest Park in order in the last of the first inning. But after that the right hander had trouble locating the strike zone. Whims unleashed seven errant pitches, three of which scored Forest Park runs. Those seven pitches overshadowed an otherwise-impressive performance. Whims ended up pitching a two-hitter while fanning eight and walking four. "Darnell was having problems with his curveball,'' Frederick manager Ike Rhoderick said after the game. "The pitches were breaking down in the dirt." While Whims' pitches weren't breaking at the right time, the curveballs of Smith were. Smith, while scattering four Frederick National hits, fanned 10 batters and walked three. "Their pitcher's curveball had the boys off balance," Rhoderick said. "We couldn't get a ball out of the infield." The only Frederick National hit that made it past the infield was a two-run homer by Whims in the top of the first giving Frederick National its only lead of the game at 2-0. "Those wild pitches were the difference in the ball game," Rhoderick said. "Defensively, we did pretty good." Forest Park cut Frederick National's lead to 2-1 in the last of the second when Raynard Billy walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, to third on a passed ball, and then finally home on another wild pitch. The Baltimore City team tied the score in the last of the third on a one run single by Billy. The winners took the lead for good in the fourth when Derek McKnight wafted and then scored on three wild pitches. Meanwhile, Ronald Clark walked, advanced two bases on two of Whims' wild pitches that eventually scored McKnight and then scored an another wild pitch, giving Forest Park a 4-2 lead. Frederick National had a big opportunity to rally in the top of the sixth. Whims led off with a single. Jay Wastler singled and Matt Smith singled to load the bases. Then, Whims was forced out at home when Jerome Patterson hit into a fielder's choice, but Frederick National pulled to within one of Forest Park, scoring a run on an error by the second baseman. However, Smith retired the next two batters in order to end the game. Billy and Anthony Wilson had the only hits for Forest Park. Whims had two hits for Frederick National, including his two-run homer in the first and Jay Wastler and Smith each had one hit.

Frederick National rebounds
HAGERSTOWN — Frederick National clubbed four home runs en route to pounding Valley, 12-7. in state Section I Little League play Thursday. The win evens Frederick's record to 1-1 in the tournament. The city team plays the loser of Thursday's 6 p.m. contest between Rising Sun and Forest Park, today at 6 p.m. at Halfway Park, Darnell Whims hit two home runs for Frederick, while David Allen and Jason Davis socked one each. The Frederick hitters reached two Valley pitchers for 11 hits, including six for extra bases "We came out ready to play and hit today." Frederick Manager Ike Rhoderick said. "Yesterday, we did not hit too well, but we were ready today." The win was not easy for the victors, however. Frederick took a 5-0 lead, before Valley scored six times in the third inning to take the lead. Frederick then scored four runs in the fourth to retake the lead for keeps. In the pivotal fourth inning. Whims hit his second home run of the game. It was a two-run shot which gave Frederick the 9-6 lead. Whims had stroked a solo homer in the first inning to give Frederick an early 1-0 lead. Allen's homer, a two-run shot, came in a four-run second inning. Davis' homer, also a two-run clout, came in a three-run Frederick fifth. Meanwhile, two Frederick hurlers were stymieing the Valley hitters. Starting pitcher Jay Wastler pitched well in his first two innings, before allowing the six Valley runs in the third inning. He ran into more trouble in the fourth when he gave up back-to-back singles with no outs. Rhoderick pulled Wastler in favor of reliever David Allen, who shutout Valley the rest of the way. "We got some good pitching performances," Rhoderick said. "Jay pitched good baseball and then Allen pitched excellent relief ball." Allen allowed only three hits in three innings. He walked only one and struck out five. Robbie Bowins led the 11-hit Frederick attack with three hits, including a run-scoring double. Allen and Whims had two hits each. Tim Boyer, Lance Dixon, Jerome Patterson and Davis had one hit each for Frederick. Joe Catoaia had three Valley hits. Lief Neild hit a three-run homer in the six run Valley third.

NL ousted from LL tournament
HALFWAY – Frederick National couldn't stop Forest Park in the sixth inning and the rain stopped too soon in the bottom of the sixth as the local team lost to the Baltimore City team, 9-7, in the Section I Little League Tournament Friday, at Halfway Park. The loss eliminated Frederick National, the District II champions from further tournament play. Meanwhile, Forest Park faces Rising Sun, the only unbeaten team left in the double-elimination tourney, at 6 p.m., today, for the Section I crown. If Forest Park wins that game, another game will be played at 6 p.m., Sunday, to decide the sectional champion. Frederick National was leading Forest Park, 6-4, in the top of the sixth and needed to just get three outs while holding Forest Park to one run to win the game. But Raynard Billy led off the inning with a solo home run to center field and Marvin Hudson followed with a solo shot of his own to tie the score, 6-6. Anthony Wilson doubled to right center field, stole third and, after Ronald Clark grounded out to the second baseman, Mike Bailey drove in Wilson with a one-run single, giving Forest Park a 7-6 lead. The winners got two more runs in the sixth on a two-run triple by Tim Branson as Forest Park led, 9-6. "I blame myself for those two home runs," Frederick National manager Ike Rhoderick said after the game. "I signaled for fast balls to Jerome (Patterson) and I should have called for the curve ball." The weather almost cooperated with Frederick National in the last of the sixth. With two outs and one on base, Tim Boyer singled, Lance Dixon walked and Darnell Whims hit an RBI single to left center field, scoring Boyer and pulling Frederick National to within two, 9-7. As Jay Wastler stepped to the plate, it began to rain hard and play was suspended. Tournament officials informed both teams that if the game were to be called because of rain, Frederick National would win because Little League regulations state that a game becomes official after four innings, or 3'-s innings if the home team is leading. Since the sixth inning had not been completed and Frederick National was home team, the game would be official as of five innings — when Frederick was leading, 6-4. But tourney officials waited approximately 30 minutes for the rain to subside and it did. When play resumed. Wastler took a 2-1 count from Forest Park pitcher Charlie Smith and grounded out to the shortstop to end the game, stranding two Frederick National runners on base. "We didn't really get the breaks in this tournament." Rhoderick said. "We hit the ball well today, but it would take a bounce and go right to somebody." The winners took a 2-0 lead in the first on two Frederick National errors, but Frederick National cut the lead to 2-1 in the last of the first on a wild pitch. Forest Park made it a 4-1 game in the second on a two-run homer by Branson. Frederick National regained the lead in the last of the third, 6-4, on a two-run single by Matt Smith, a one-run single by Whims, an error and two wild pitches. Smith yielded 10 Frederick National hits while striking out seven and walking five. Whims and Wastler each had two hits for Frederick.

Friday - Little League
District II Tournament
East Frederick at Brunswick; Thurmont at Frederick National

July 17, 1984
Brunswick, NL, AL win
Two teams from the city and one from the county were winners in first round District 11 Little League action Wednesday.
National 4, Emmitsburg 0
Frederick National pitcher Billy Mayton nursed his no-hitter until two outs in the sixth inning Monday night against Emmitsburg. Then, he watched Matt Ohler's screaming liner rip into center field. It was a disappointing time for Mayton, but the hard-throwing right-hander hung tough, getting Darrin Kelly on strikes with runners on second and third to preserve a 4-0 Frederick National shutout victory in the opening round of the District II Little League Tournament. Mayton's pitching effort helped Frederick National into Wednesday night's game at East Frederick. Emmitsburg will play again on Friday in the double-elimination tourney against a yet-to-be-determined opponent. On Monday, Mayton's teammates provided three runs in the first off Emmitsburg hurler Scott Hewitt and another in the sixth in vintage Little League fashion. Frederick National put together three hits, three stolen bases, a wild pitch and a passed ball to forge into a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Chris Whitmore, Chuck Hayes and Frank Kulikowski each hit run-scoring singles in the frame. The winners could have had even more runs in the opening frame, but Emmitsburg center fielder Jaimie Andrew made a perfect throw to the plate to nail Brent Wise on Kulikowski's safety. Hewitt, who wasn't hit all that hard, settled down and retired 15 of the last 19 batters he faced. He was aided by a double play in the third and two nice throws from Kelly that nailed would-be base stealers. Although Mayton finished with a one-hit shutout and eight strikeouts, he didn't have an easy time of it. Emmitsburg stranded seven runners in the game and had the bases loaded on three Mayton walks with two out in the fourth. That's when a gamble by the loser's backfired. After Mike Andrew walked on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases, Ohler, who was on second, went to third and tried to catch Frederick National sleeping by going straight to home plate. It almost worked, but one Frederick National infielder saw Ohler and hollared to Mayton, who threw home in time to nail the Emmitsburg runner. The winners scored their final tally in the sixth, another one of those stereotypical Little League series of plays. Chuck Hayes started things off by beating out an infield hit. Hewitt's wild pitch sent Hayes to second, and the Emmitsburg hurler's wild pickoff throw got him to third. Hayes then scored on Hewitt's third wild pitch of the game. Emmitsburg put together a late rally in the sixth. After Hewitt walked, Mayton struck out the next two hitters. Then, Ohler drilled a 1-0 pitch to center, with Hewitt going to third and Ohler to second on the center fielders' error. Mayton's eighth strikeout ended the visitor's hopes.

EF, Brunswick, Thurmont gain LL wins
E. Frederick 6, National 2
Sparked by a timely two-run double by Jeff Zimmerman in the top of the fourth inning, East Frederick broke open a scoreless game and went on to down defending District II champion Frederick National, 6-2, Wednesday evening. East Frederick now visits Brunswick at 6 p.m., Friday, in the winner's bracket of the double-elimination tourney while Frederick National hosts Thurmont at 6 p.m., Friday. The loser of that game will be eliminated from the district tourney. The game appeared to be a pitchers' duel for the first three innings as East Frederick starter Chad Stull and Frederick National's Bo Weedon held their respective opponents to just one hit. Then, in the top of the fourth, East Frederick got all the runs it needed to win the game. T. J. Onley had a leadoff double and after Stull struck out, Chip Stitely drew a walk and both he and Onley scored on a double to left-center by Zimmerman. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Zimmerman scored on a Steve Wilhelm single and East Frederick led 3-0. The winners got three more runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Jermaine Hill, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Wilhelm. Frederick National got two runs in the last of the sixth on an RBI single by Tim Blank and an RBI groundout by Wesley Ambush. Stull, now 9-0 this year for East Frederick, showed why he is one of the top pitchers in that league. The right-hander, who stands more than 6-foot tall, used his deceptive pitches to scatter six hits, strike out seven and walk three. Weedon also allowed six hits for Frederick National, struck out seven and walked only one.

July 21, 1984
Thurmont 9, National 4
Thurmont and Frederick National, a pair of heavy-hitting Little League teams gathered at the Frederick National field Friday night and together sprayed 23 assorted hits around the park. But it was Herb Grimm's clutch pitching and a Dave Elliot grand slam in a five-run Thurmont fifth which made the difference in Thurmont's 9-4 victory over Frederick National in the District II Little League tournament. Thurmont goes on to meet the winner of Monday night’s Frederick American-Emmitsburg game next Wednesday, while Frederick National was eliminated from the double-elimination tourney. Grimm allowed 11 Frederick National hits in the game, but he also struck out a dozen batters. Although he walked three, the south paw with a picture perfect delivery tossed 74 strikes to only 30 balls. Grim was also three-for- four at the plate. Thurmont threatened to make the game a blowout from the outset, building up an 8-0 lead after three innings. While Grimm was striking out seven of the first 13 batters he faced, he and his team mates battered Frederick National starter Billy Mayton for 10 of their 12 hits over those three innings. Actually, Thurmont had the chance to score even more runs, but had a runner thrown out at the plate in each of the first two innings. In the first, Thurmont had men on second and third with nobody out, but Scott Dewees' grounder to third was turned into a third-to-first-to-home double play. Elliott Smith knocked in a run with a single after that double play and Grimm and Jessie Ketterman plated second inning runs for a 3-0 Thurmont lead. Center fielder Bo Weedon cut down Ketterman at home on a nice throw to stem Thurmont's mounting offense. Then Thurmont pulled out its big bats in the third. Ketterman hit a bases loaded single with two outs for the first run of the inning and when Elliot clobbered a 2-1 Mayton pitch to left for a grand slam, it looked like the game was history. But the Frederick National bats woke up quickly. Boo Weedon, who had a fine four-for- four night, hit a double to begin a five-hit, three-run rally. Run-scoring singles by Chris Tobery and Billy Duvall highlighted the frame Tobery knocked in Weedon in the fifth to make it a 9-4 game, but Frederick National left the bases loaded and Thurmont avoided a potential strong comeback bid. Thurmont scored its final run on a Dewees single, a couple of wild pitches and a groundout. Weedon led Frederick National with his four-hit effort and a pair of runs scored, while Duvall and Tobery each had a pair of hits. Tobery also knocked in two runs, and Mike Smith pitched two innings of stellar relief. Elliot joined Grimmin the three-hit category for the winners, while Ketterman had a pair of hits and two RBI’s.

Brunswick, National win LL games
National 8, EF 5
There was good news and bad news for the National team. National won its first-round game, 8-5. However, the city team lost one of its starters for the rest of the tournament because of an injury. Center fielder Mark Weedon, who supplied National with a two-run triple to spark a five-run first inning, injured his ankle in the bottom of the sixth inning. "Mark and Jeff Kluttz had big hits in that first inning," National manager Jack Pearson said. "We had a shaky first inning, but after that we played a real good game," East manager Ronald Rice said. National used two hits, two walks and three errors to score its five runs in the first inning National never trailed in the game, but did have its hands full with the crosstown rivals East Frederick rallied back from the 5-0 National lead. The home team scored three runs in the second inning and once in the third to cut the lead to 5- 4. David Rice smacked a solo homer in the second inning to key the three-run uprising. National scored a run in the fourth to increase its lead to 6-4.  However, East came back again, scoring a run in its half of the fourth to pull within a run, 6-5. National then scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings for an 8-5 lead. Aaron Toms slugged a solo homer in the fifth inning for the winners. Rice led a 10-hit losing attack. The catcher had three hits. Mike Carey added two hits for East. Kluttz, Weedon and Toms had two hits each for the winners Jerome Pryor also played a key role for the winners. He relieved Chris Pollzzie in the third inning and calmed the East batters the rest of the way

Brunswick, Emmitsburg advance in LL tourney
Brunswick and Emmitsburg remained unbeaten in District II Little League play Wednesday Brunswick won a 5-4 decision from Frederick National, while Emmitsburg pounded Westminster, 14-0. Meanwhile Frederick American beat East Frederick, 16-2 The loss was the second for EF and eliminates them from the double-elimination tournament The tournament will continue Friday with a match-up between Brunswick and Emmitsburg at Brunswick. In other games on Friday, American will travel to Westminster and National will host Thurmont. The losers of those two games will be eliminated.
Brunswick 5, National 4
BRUNSWICK - Chris Axline's two run one out single in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Brunswick a come from behind 5-4 win over National Little League in the District II Little League Tournament, Wednesday Brunswick had led earlier in the game, 3-1, thanks to a two run home run by Chad Riland in the last of the fourth, but National tied the score in the top of the fifth on a one run double by Chris Pollzzie and an RBI groundout by Aaron Toms. National took a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth with one out when Jerome Pryor took an offering from Brunswick pitcher Joey Lucas and sent it over the left center field fence for a solo home run. At this point, National appeared to gain some momentum, but it didn't last long. In the Brunswick half of the sixth, Robby Donovan led off with a double and Riland grounded out to the shortstop to advance Donovan on to third base Then, Jeff Lincks drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch, putting the game winning run at second. Mark Myers, making his first appearance at the plate for Brunswick in the sixth, laid down a bunt near the third base line and no play was made for any runner, giving him a bunt single and loading the bases. This brought Axline to the plate. Axline responded with his second consecutive hit in as many plate appearances, scoring Donovan from third.  Lincks never hesititated as he rounded third to score the winning run and bring the Brunswick dugout alive with celebration. National took the first lead of the game, scoring one run in the second on a wild pitch But the winners answered with one run in the last of the second on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Dawson and then Riland's two-run shot in the fourth gave them the lead Lucas had a good day on the mound for Brunswick, giving up five hits while fanning seven and walking three. For National, Toms went the distance, allowing six hits and walking only two. Riland and Axline each had two hits and drove in two runs for Brunswick. Pryor had two hits for National, including his solo homer m the sixth.

Emmitsburg, NL, AL win
NL 10, Thurmont 4
National Little League had some trouble getting started in its District II game against Thurmont Friday in Frederick. After three innings Thurmont was leading 3-2. But the host team scored three times in the fourth and five in the fifth and went on to down Thurmont, 10-4. The win means the city team will now play at American Little League Monday. The winner of that games meets Brunswick on Wednesday. Thurmont was eliminated. National managed its 10 runs on only nine hits, but six of those hits came in two innings. American win ousts National
Thanks to the pitching of Curtis Thomas and the hitting of Chad Putnam, the American League is still alive in the District II Little League Tournament. Thomas pitched a three-hitter and Putnam hit a three-run homer as the American League beat the National League, 3-1, Monday at Austin Angleberger Park. The win eliminated the National League while the American League plays at Brunswick Wednesday. The winners of Wednesday's game will face unbeaten Emmitsburg Friday. Brunswick and the American League each have one loss in the double elimination tournament. Putnam provided all the offense the American League would need when he clouted the ball over the left field fence in the first inning. The homer came after an error and a single by Thomas. Meanwhile, Thomas pitched out of several jams to gain the win. Relying mainly off off-speed breaking balls, he fanned seven and walked four. He was in trouble in the first inning when an error and a single by Chris Pollzzie allowed the first two batters to reach with none out, but he retired the next three in a row. In the second inning he walked the bases loaded with two out, but then stuck out the next man on three pitches. Thomas did not give up a run until the sixth when Aaron Toms hit a home run. Jeff Kluttz then reached base on an error, but Thomas got the next three batters, mainly with fastballs. Jerome Pryor lost a six-hitter for the National League. He allowed five of the hits in the first two innings. In the second inning, the American League had men on second and third with one out, but Pryor pitched out of the jam. He did not allow more than one base runner in an inning after that and finished with three strikeouts and two walks. Wayne Cook and Carroll had doubles for the American League.

Brunswick, Thurmont, NL, AL win in district LL action
NL 8, Taneytown 0
Frederick National Little League staked its ace hurler, Jay Thompson, to an 8-0 lead over Taneytown before he even threw his first pitch last night as National went on to a 17-1 win at its own park. The hard-throwing right-hander struck out 10 and allowed just one hit — a single to right by Jimmy Fowler in the fifth inning. Thompson walked eight batters but with the early lead he was never in trouble. Thompson, picked up two strikeouts and quickly retired Taneytown in the first inning to set the tone for the night. Taneytown's only base runner was thrown out trying to steal third base. While Thompson was displaying an overpowering pitching effort, he and his teammates banged out 18 hits and were flawless in the field. Thompson went 3 for 5 with a double and a pair of singles and scored three runs. Charlie Thomas, National's fleet footed leadoff batter and catcher Clay Reader also scored three runs. Thomas got things started in the first inning with a leadoff walk. He scored on Thompson's first-inning single. Thomas walked again in the inning and scored the eighth and final run for National in the opening frame. National's big hit in the first Lining was a line drive, opposite field three-run home run over the leftfield fence by Scott Viands. Reader's round-tripper in the second inning was responsible for both National runs. The city team scored three more times in the third inning. Thomas opened with a single and eventually scored on an error by the second baseman. Thompson, who singled and went to third on the error, scored in front of Colyn Keller's two-run homer over the centerfield fence. National plated three more runs hi the fourth inning on four hits and scored its final run in the fifth when Reader doubled and scored on a throwing error by Taneytown third baseman Matt Lefaivre. Danny Wineholt scored the only run by Taneytown on Fowler's hit. Wineholt waited out Thompson and worked him for a walk to reach base.

National, Brunswick stay unbeaten
National 18, American 7
National pounded out 16 hits and took advantage of 7 Frederick American errors to win 18-7 at Austin F. Angleberger Memorial Stadium yesterday. National's hitters picked up right where they left off in Monday's win over Taneytown. American starter John Hammond had only thrown nine pitches in the first inning and National scored three runs on two doubles and two singles. Colyn Keller lifted a sacrifice fly to score National's fourth run. Later in the inning, Greg Shearer doubled, scoring Chris Kilby to stake the winners to a 5-0 lead after one inning. American scored its first run when Mike Malone singled and National starter Kevin Wienke issued three straight walks to force in a run. But by that time National held an 11-1 lead. Wienke earned the win with 4.1 innings of four hit pitching, but gave way to Pearson hi the fifth after walking his 11th batter. Wienke led the winners with three hits, while Charlie Thomas, Pearson, Jay Thompson, Colyn Keller and Shearer each had two hits. Malone and Bobby Monard each had a pair of hits for American.

Brunswick defeats National
Brunswick used good pitching and two home runs by Joey Lucas to remain unbeaten in District II Little League action with a 9-5 win over National at National's home park last night. In other games last night, American defeated Westminster, 10-7, to eliminate the Carroll County team from further District play while Emmitsburg ousted Thurmont, 7-1. Lucas gave the winners a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning when he homered off National starter Jay Thompson with two men on base. Brunswick scored two more runs in the initial frame to stake Lucas to a 5-0 lead before he even threw a pitch. After both teams added single runs in the second inning, National came to bat in the bottom of the third trailing 6-1 and scored five four times. Kevin Pearson led off with a double. Thompson tripled and Kevin Wienke singled on the next two pitches to cut the lead to 6-3. One out later, Scott Viands homered, scoring Wienke and pulling National as close as they would ever get at 6-5. Then it appeared that the home team might be catching up with Lucas' fastball. But he settled down to strike out five of the next six batters and shut National down the rest of the way for the win. Lucas scattered eight hits, struck out 12 and walked one. He threw 98 pitches — 78 for strikes. Lucas homered again with one out in the sixth to provide Brunswick with its final run. Viands led the National Little League hitters with a double, triple, and home run in three trips to the plate. Wienke added a pair of singles. Chad Riland and Matt Domer each had two singles and Pat Smith had a pinch hit double for Brunswick.

American ousts National, 5-1
American Little League eliminated National Little League from further District II play with a 5-1 win last night at Robert B Staley Memorial Stadium. American will face Brunswick at Brunswick on Friday at 6p.m. for the district championship. Brunswick is undefeated and American would have to win twice for the district championship. With the win, American avenged an earlier 18-7 rout by National where the pitching gave up 16 hits and the defense made seven errors. "We were flat We came out that night and made a bunch of errors," said American Manager Rodney Smith. "Tonight we hit the ball when we had to and made the plays when we had to." American took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Mike Malone led off with a solo home run off the scoreboard in right-center field. The winners added three more runs in the third when John Hammond reached on an error, Chris Butts singled and Tom Lidie reeached on another error to load the bases. Bobby Monard singled to score Hammond with the eventual winning run. A wild pitch and a passed ball scored Lidie and Monard to give American a 4-0 lead. Malone started on the mound for American and picked up his second complete game win of the tournament. He struck out eight batters and walked just two while allowing five hits. He gave up back to back doubles by Scott Viands and Colyn Keller in the fourth for National's only run. American added an unearned run in the top of the fourth to cap off the scoring. Charlie Thomas took the loss for National, despite pitching a fine ballgame. He scattered six hits, fanned four and didn't walk a batter. The only earned run he gave up was Malone's home run Thomas faced just one batter more than Malone, pitching to 27 men Todd Working led the American batters with a pair of hits. 2 county LL teams still undefeated
Brunswick, American, and East Frederick were all winners in District II Little League Tournament play, Wednesday. Brunswick held off National, American defeated Thurmont, and East Frederick eliminated Emmitsburg. Brunswick and American are the only undefeated teams left in the double elimination tourney, and will play each other at 6 p.m., Friday, at American. National drops into the loser's bracket and will host Westminster at 6 p m Friday. Westminster eliminated Taneytown in a losers' bracket game on Wednesday, 10-0. East Frederick will host Thurmont at 6 p.m., Friday, in a losers' bracket game.
Brunswick 11, Nat. 8
BRUNSWICK - Jeff Oden, of Brunswick, struggled through his pitching assignment against National, Wednesday. But he had a great finish to hold off the city Little League team, 11-8, in a District II winners' bracket game, Brunswick now moves into the finals of the winners' bracket, where it will play at American at 6 p.m., Friday. The winner of that game advances to the district finals, Friday, July 24. Oden had hurled one-hit baseball through the first two innings of Wednesday's game, but he was still hampered by control problems. He ended up walking 12 National batters, threw six wild pitches, and watched a 10-0 lead dwindle to an 11-8 count. His biggest problem came in the last of the fifth. Oden walked leadoff batter Kevin Kraft and then yielded a single to Todd Boyer. After Tony Wickless struck out, Kraft and Boyer advanced one base on a Brunswick error, and Oden walked Tim Shaw to load the bases. Jason Wetzel then stepped to the plate and hit a fly ball to right fielder Dwayne Stockman. Stockman quickly threw to catcher Jason Frushour, cutting off any chance of a sacrifice fly. Frushour threw the baseball to shortstop Matt Domer and Kraft broke for home plate. Domer then rifled the baseball back to Frushour to get Kraft out at home, ending the inning. All of Oden's previous control problems ended in the last of the sixth when he struck out the side. Oden ended up striking out eight National batters. Early in the game, it looked as if Brunswick might be headed for another rout. The host team scored six runs on six hits, and sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the first. Domer had a two-run home run and Frushour had a solo shot during that inning, while the other three runs came on a Matt Harps single and a bases loaded walk. Brunswick then added four more runs in the second on a one-run double by Brian Rice, an RBI single by Chad Sowers, and another bases-loaded walk. Brunswick got one final run in the fifth on a National error. National broke the Brunswick shutout in the third with five runs. Keith Crum belted a three-run homer, and the remaining two National runs scoring on a wild pitch and a fielder's choice. Tim Shaw drove in three runs for National in the fourth with a three-run homer. Frushour, Domer, Rice and Harps each had two hits to lead Brunswick. Boyer pitched two innings for National, but he was relieved in the third by Wickless. Boyer gave up nine hits, struck out three and walked five, and Wickless hurled one-hit baseball in relief while striking out four. He did not walk a batter. Boyer had three hits for National.

Thurmont eliminates National
THURMONT - A 10-run fifth inning enabled Thurmont to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 12-4 win, eliminating National from the District II Little League Tournament, Monday, at Leisner Field. Thurmont, American and unbeaten Brunswick are the only three teams remaining in the double-elimination tournament. Thurmont will play at American at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the finals of the losers' bracket. The winner of that game meets Brunswick at 6 p.m., Friday, for the district title. Brunswick is the defending district, sectional, state and regional Little League champion. Thurmont nearly took itself out of the game in the last of the fourth when National scored two runs. A sacrifice fly by Kevin Kraft, coupled with three Thurmont errors, accounted for both runs in the fourth as National took a 4-2 lead. It didn't take long for Thurmont to erase that lead. In the top of the fifth, Joey Wetzel led off the inning with a single and Scott Clabaugh reached base on an error. Then, Shawn Dewees cleared the bases, taking a 1-0 pitch from National starter Tony Wickless, with a towering three-run run home run beyond the left-center field fence. The three-run shot gave Thurmont a 5-4 lead. Thurmont's remaining seven runs came on a Ken Grimes pinch-hit, RBI single, a two-run double by Wetzel, a one-run double by Dewees, a one-run single by Tom Shaffer, and five National errors. The winners took a 2-0 lead in the third on a Chad Lawyer RBI single and a National error. But National rebounded in the last of the third with a pair of runs on a two-run homer by Wickless. Both teams blew earlier scoring opportunities. Thurmont opened the game with a leadoff infield single from Wetzel, only to be caught stealing second base on a throw National catcher Stu Quay. Clabaugh and Dewees followed with back-to-back singles, but Wickless fanned the next two batters for Thurmont to end the inning. Kraft drew a leadoff walk from Dewees in the National half of the first, and Todd Boyer followed with a single. However, Dewees retired the next three National batters in order. Dewees was Thurmont's winning pitcher. He gave up five hits, fanned nine, and walked four. Wetzel and Dewees each had three hits for Thurmont, while Shaffer had two. Dewees drove in four runs for the winners and Wetzel drove in two runs. Kraft relieved Wickness in the sixth for National. The pair allowed 11 hits, struck out nine and walked only two. Wickless led National in RBIs with two.
