Volunteer Opportunities

North Allegheny Soccer Club is a volunteer run non-profit youth soccer organization.  If you are interested in giving of either your time or money to help us promote soccer and physical activity for youngsters within the North Allegheny School District, please see below for more information on various club postions.

Volunteer Positions

Coach
At least one coach is required for every team NASC organizes.  Coaches are responsible for planning and running practices plus organizing their teams for games.  Many of our programs have a degree of Player Development Training built into the program which utilizes professional soccer trainers to provided skilled training to the players.  These trainers also aid the coaches in developing practices for their individual teams. NASC and PAWest provide opportunities for coaches to obtain various levels of training.  We will help you advance your skills as you move up the age group levels with the children.  Patience and an ability to work with kids are highly recommended attributes for anyone interested in coaching.

Assistant Coach
This position is fairly obvious. Asst. Coaches help the Coach as needed with the training and running of a specific team.  Our Under 7, Under 8, and Under 9/Under 10 programs need a minimum of 2 coaches per team since game days consist of two simultaneous games on adjacent fields.

Under 6 Facilitator
Much of a U6 session involves groups of 6 players (with a facilitator) breaking out to conduct 3v3 games and training exercises as directed by the session coordinator.  Therefore we need one facilitator for every 6 kids.  With 120-132 or so kids in a session that means 20-22 facilitator per session!  Knowledge of soccer is not required.  (You can learn right along with your child.)  An ability to corral and motivate six 5 year olds is very helpful!

Team Manager

Team Parents assist the coaches with the administrative aspects of a team.  Duties of a team parent may include creating and overseeing the snack schedule, organizing any team parties or season ending awards events, or simple helping the coach communicate with the teams parents and players.

Referee (Officials)
Referees are the only "volunteers" within NASC who actually get paid.  Referees are licensed by the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) after taking required training and passing a test about the Laws of the Game.  Training classes are usually held every winter in our area and we are always interested in new refs.  Referees must be at least 12 years of age prior to the start of the season and hold a USSF certificate.  Referees are responsible for ensuring games are safe and fair.   At the younger age levels (U10 and below), NASC also uses referees to assist the young players in learning the Laws of the Game of Soccer. See the
Referee's Corner for more details.

Field Preparation
No this does NOT mean push a mower!  Anyone volunteering to assist with Field Preparation will work with the NASC Directors of Field Maintenance and Field Scheduling to do such things as move goals, replace worn goal nets, coordinate with the various municipal authorities involved to ensure trash receptacles are in place or removed, coordinate with our lining crews and our landscaper/mowers on any special requests.  Generally this position helps to ensure that are fields are in playing condition BEFORE the players arrive.

Administration/Website/Public Relations
These 3 positions are inter-related.  We need help on a periodic basis with creating and organizing a club newsletter,  data entry, getting notices and/or announcements published in the local press, getting flyers into the local schools, and keeping the general content of this web site current.  If you have been at all frustrated with the communications from NASC (or the lack there of), please volunteer to pitch in!  Anyone with web publishing knowledge that desires to help us make this site even better is most welcome!

Board Member
NASC is an entirely volunteer run organization.  The NASC Board of Directors meets once a month for a general meeting (which is always open to the public) and various committees meet as needed to grapple with specific issues.
One of the most vital board positions is that of Age Group Coordinator. (AGC)  Our AGCs are the ones who form the teams, create the schedules, distribute the equipment and oversee the general smooth operation of each of our various programs.  If you want a hand in how your child's soccer experience evolves, this is where you should sign up!
Please see the links to our Board of Directors and our Bylaws (click "About Us" at the top) to learn in more details all the positions we have on our board.

Board Positions

Club Secretary:  Primarily tasked to be the Board’s recording secretary, this person is expected to attend all meetings (normally the first Monday of every month), noting the minutes, typing them up within a week or so, and then emailing the results to all of the other Board members.  Additional potential projects may include arranging with NA schools for meeting space and updating the internal Board roster.  NO KNOWLEDGE OF SOCCER REQUIRED!

Vice-President:  The role of the Vice-President is to manage the board roster, coordinate elections, manage projects, coordinate the club calendar and support club activities.  Ideally this is a training position for someone interested in becoming club president.

Travel Registrar:  The Travel Registrar is responsible for managing the paperwork needed to register the travel players and coaches with PA West, including collecting pictures and birth certificates, printing player cards, and printing rosters.

Director of Fields:  The Director of Fields assures the fields, nets, and goals are available and safe for play.  This includes coordinating volunteers on field day to pick up trash, repair or replace nets, move goals, build micro goals, and fill and distribute sandbags.  During the season, the Director of Fields evaluates field conditions for playability, makes decisions to open or close fields, and coordinates needed repairs with our turf contractor.

Equipment Director:   These Equipment Director's responsibilities include the purchasing, inventory, and storage (not at your house!) of our field and coach equipment (goals, balls, cones, practice vests, etc.) and managing, with the help of our age group coordinators, the distribution and return of this equipment each season.  In addition, this person oversees the ordering and distribution of our player jerseys.  Most of the activity involved in this position occurs in the few weeks surrounding the start of each season.

Age Group Coordinator:  Age group coordinators are the heart of our organization.  Age group coordinators are the "managers' of each specific program and oversee all aspects of them.  Their duties include forming teams, creating schedules, and communicating with coaches within their respective age groups.  The U6 position is a bit unique since it also involves running the Saturday sessions from our established curriculum for our youngest players, but what a fun time that is!

A basic working knowledge of MS Excel and high-speed internet access is required for age group coordinators, but NASC may be able to assist a willing, capable volunteer with this if need be.

Referee Assignor:   The Referee Assignor (Friend of the Board) will ensure that all of our games have properly certified and qualified referees assigned to them.  US Youth Soccer requires all referee assignors to complete a 4 hour training course.  This course is conducted locally each winter by PAWest.   He plans to mentor his replacement next spring and help them grow into the position.

Our referee assignor will be required to complete a schedule of referees each week for all of the NASC games and email the list to the referees.  Then the fun starts.  Referees, most of whom are teenagers, often have conflicts, so this person must deal with the changes.  NASC will consider reimbursing our referee assignor for a second phone line with an answering machine to aid in this endeavor.  Good organizational skills will be a big help for this position.

Webmaster:  This is not a Board position, but NASC needs help maintaining and updating our website.  High-speed internet access and moderate computer knowledge is required for this position, but strong web knowledge is not required.  The website is currently maintained with the free software Nvu, which is easily self taught.

Director of Coaching and Player Development:  This individual is responsible for the overall coordination of  all coaches' training and player development programs.  The Director will be responsible for coordination between the Club and all professional training consultants contracted for coaching and/or player development.  This shall include scheduling of all development programs in coordination with the appropiate program directors.
