What qualifications do I need to become a youth soccer referee?
To become an official youth soccer referee, you need to complete a training course offered by Mass State Referee Committee. This often includes learning the rules of the game and passing a test. Additionally, being a good communicator and having a passion for soccer can be beneficial. You can also become a HYS in-town referee which requires less formal training.
What is the age requirement to become a youth soccer referee?
At Holden Youth Soccer we require referees to be at least 12 to 14 years old for our in-town games. Some organizations may offer junior referee programs for younger participants. To become an official Grassroots referee in Mass you need to be 14 years or older.
How much do youth soccer referees get paid?
Pay rates for youth referees vary based on the level of play, duration of the game, and your experience. Typically, in-town referees earn between $20 to $25 per match. Official refereeing will also depend on the league but U10 games are approx. $40-$50 and can go up to $70-$80 for older teams.
What is the typical schedule for youth soccer referees?
Referees usually officiate games on weekends and sometimes during weekday evenings. Your schedule will depend on the number of games assigned to you, your availability, and the league’s calendar.
Can I referee games if I am also playing soccer?
Yes, many referees play soccer as well! Just ensure that you can manage your time effectively and keep your commitments balanced between playing and officiating.
What support will I receive as a youth soccer referee?
Holden Youth Soccer provides ongoing education, mentorship, and opportunities for feedback. When you start, you may be paired with more experienced referees to help you learn.
What should I wear while officiating games?
HYS will provide a standardized referee jersey and typically black shorts/socks, and appropriate footwear. Additionally, you should have a whistle, yellow and red cards, and a notebook to keep track of the game. To officiate CMYSL games you will need an official referee uniform and patch.
How do I handle difficult situations on the field?
Handling difficult situations requires a calm demeanor and good communication skills. Enforcing the rules fairly, maintaining control, and communicating effectively with players and coaches are key. Further training on conflict resolution can be beneficial.
