Baseball, in its purest and simplest form, only requires a ball, bat, and fielding glove. Generally, there is no need to spend excessive amounts of money on equipment each season, especially for the lowest levels of Little League baseball. Our Tee Ball and Coach Pitch levels are designed to introduce players to the sport and develop their love of the game. Spending tons or money for a new player who may or may not continue playing (although, of course, we hope they do continue!) may not be the wisest decision.

We usually have at least one Little League Days shopping event at our local Dick's Sporting Goods stores (Wilkes-Barre and Scranton), for which the league receives a 20% off discount coupon good for three or four days over a weekend (Friday - Sunday or Friday - Monday). Also, used equipment, whether hand-me-downs from an older family member, used sporting goods shop, or online seller, are also options.

Glove
All players, regardless of age or level, require a baseball glove to play the game. Find a glove that properly fits your player's hand so it will allow them to properly and safely catch a baseball. The quality of gloves can vary greatly. A glove that is well made does not have to cost hundreds of dollars. The key is to have a glove that is broken in with a decent pocket so that you player can easily catch the ball. At higher levels, players may want to have their own position-specific gloves, especially catchers and first basemen.

Uniform
As part of the registration fee, WBCLL provides each player (and coach) with a baseball cap and shirt or jersey (depending on level). Parents/guardians are responsible for all other parts of the uniform - pants, belts, and socks. Baseball pants are recommended for Tee Ball and required for all other levels. White or gray pants are acceptable with more players wearing gray than white. We recommend waiting until learning your player's team uniform color(s) before purchasing a belt and socks so that you may match them to the shirt/jersey.

As part of the uniform, all male players should wear a protective cup. All male players playing the catcher position are required to wear one and will not be allowed to play the position if they are not wearing a protective cup. Female players are not required to wear a protective cup for any position.

Spikes
Baseball spikes are recommended for Tee Ball and Coach Pitch and required for Minors and above. All levels may wear TPU or molded spikes; however, only Juniors and Seniors may wear metal spikes. Metal spikes are prohibited at the Tee Ball, Coach Pitch, Minor, and Major levels.

Bat
Many players have their own baseball bats, but this is not a requirement, as the league provides bats to every team. Little League has very specific rules regarding bats - see our webpage on Equipment Rules for specifics. There are many resources on how to choose a baseball bat; some examples include Baseball Monkey, Dick's Sporting Goods, and JustBats. Pay specific attention to the length and weight of your player's preferred bat.

Helmet
Just like baseball bats, many players have their own batting helmets, but this is not a requirement, as the league provides helmets to every team. Little League has very specific rules regarding batting helmets - see our webpage on Equipment Rules for specifics. Players should wear a helmet that is comfortable yet does not easily shift in any direction during regular baseball movements. Players have the option to wear helmets with approved (i.e., pre-installed or specifically-designed) facemasks and jaw protectors.

Backpack / Batpack / Equipment Bag
Having an equipment bag of some sort is completely optional; however as players move up levels, they have a tendency to acquire more and more equipment and accessories, so a bag is almost a necessity. While a Tee Ball player may only have their baseball glove and water bottle, a Little Leaguer may have multiple gloves for different positions, multiple bats, a batting helmet, batting gloves, and other accessories.

Batting Gloves
Wearing batting gloves is completely optional and a player preference. While many players at almost all levels, from Minors through the professional Major Leagues wear batting gloves, many do not or only wear one batting glove, as opposed to the more common two batting gloves. Some of the best hitters in MLB history did not wear batting gloves. Players need to determine what feels best to them.

Eye Black
The ultimate accessory, but completely optional. Eye black can help reduce the reflection of light off a player's cheekbones in bright sunlight or under field lights (which WBCLL's home field has). However, for younger players , the real purpose is help them feel cool like their MLB counterparts - and such coolness cannot be understated.
