Tackle Football Overview

COMMITMENT:

Tackle Football is unlike any other youth team sport which requires a significant commitment from the participant as well as the parents. The football games require knowledgeable and well conditioned participants for the entire team to succeed.  If your child is not participating in practices, then it will not be safe for them to play in competitions and they will not be effective in the team environment.

PRACTICES:
Mandatory practice begins August 1st. August practices are 5 days per week, 2 1/2 hours per day, which reduce to 3 days per week, 2 hours per day after Labor Day.

The first week of practice is non-contact. Each player is required to fulfill a 10 hour conditioning requirement before any contact can be initiated. The second week is in full pads, an additional 10 hours of practice is required before a team may engage in inter-squad scrimmages. The time allocated to practice does not include break time. Water breaks are given as needed when requested by the participants.

GAME DAYS:

Tackle games are held on Saturdays. Our home fields are either at Palos Verdes or Peninsula High Schools. Game times are normally scheduled from youngest teams playing earliest (8:00am or 9:00am) and the oldest finishing out the day.
Palos Verdes Pop Warner is an association within the Southern California Conference (SCC). Games will be played on Saturdays versus OTHER CITIES / ASSOCIATIONS within the SCC, and other outside Conferences. Travel is GUARANTEED. Expect to travel as far north as Lancaster, as far south as southern Orange County, and as far EAST as Murrieta, during regular season play.

GAMES WILL BE PLAYED ON LABOR DAY WEEKEND.

Note: Most teams arrive at least one hour prior to game start to warm up, have equipment checked and do run throughs.   Arrival time is directed by the head coach and/or team manager.

POP WARNER - SAFETY FIRST:

Pop Warner places value on safety measures that make a difference. That’s why PV Football & Cheer is a member association of Pop Warner. Pop Warner has reduced contact to 25% of practice time, eliminated kickoffs for our youngest divisions and require that any player who suffers a suspected head injury receive medical clearance from a concussion specialist before returning to play.

CPR & FIRST AID CERTIFICATION

Pop Warner rules require that all practices must be attended by one person holding a Red Cross Community CPR and a First Aid certification OR National Center for Sports Safety PREPARE Certificate of Completion, or equivalent, if not by an EMT or volunteer physician. In the absence of a specialized, trained person affiliated with the team in the medical area (physician, paramedic, specially trained volunteer, Certified Athletic Trainer), Palos Verdes Youth Football & Cheer requires the Head Coach as well as an Assistant Coach to be the holders of a current Red Cross Certificate in Community CPR and First Aid, or the P.R.E.P.A.R.E. Course by the National Center for Sport Safety or its equivalent.

INJURY PREVENTION

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury, or TBI, caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head that can change the way your brain normally works. Concussions can also occur from a fall or a blow to the body that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth. Health care professionals may describe a concussion as a “mild” brain injury because concussions are usually not life-threatening. Even so, their effects can be serious. Any participant that has had an injury at practice play or competition due to a head injury or suspected concussion may NOT return to his/her team/squad until the participant has been evaluated by a currently licensed medical professional trained in the evaluation and management of concussions and receives written clearance to return to play from the licensed practioner. Palos Verdes Youth Football and Cheer with Pop Warner recommends that all decisions be made in the best interest of the children and that when any doubt exists as to the health of the participant, they sit out.

MANDATORY BACKGROUND CHECKS

PVYF&C is concerned about the safety of our participants and does not want to put any of our participants in harms way. ALL coaches and badged personnel are required to be LiveScanned in order to be on the field with our players, for the safety of our participants. Those that have not submitted to a LiveScan background check are NOT allowed to be on the field at practices or games, at all, ever, NO EXCEPTIONS.
