Umpire Guidelines & Expectations – MYBSL 2025
Appearance
- Maintain a professional appearance. A collared shirt is required.
- Official shirts from the previous year may be used. If you do not have one, I will work on providing one for you.
Communication
Be loud and clear when making calls to ensure coaches and players can hear.
Calls should be assertive and distinct: Out, Safe, Strike, Ball, Foul Ball.
Positioning
- Stay mobile—adjust your position to make the best possible calls.
- If umpiring solo, prioritize positioning to ensure clear visibility of plays.
Strike Zone
- Younger Age Groups: The strike zone extends from line to line, chest to knees. No strikes above the head.
- Older Age Groups: The strike zone should be gradually tightened for accuracy and consistency.
Pregame Responsibilities
- Arrive at least 15 minutes before game time.
- Five minutes before game time, call both coaches to the plate for a pregame discussion, reviewing rules and addressing any questions.
Equipment
- Umpires are responsible for their equipment, including timers, chest pads, and masks.
- All MYBSL equipment must be returned to the Press Box after the game.
Rules & Regulations

- Key rule emphasis:
- Batting Helmets: All players must wear helmets with masks.
- Softball Pitchers: The leap rule will be enforced.
Scheduling & Pay
- The game schedule is maintained in a shared Google Sheet, accessible to all coaches and umpires.
- Pay will be bi-weekly – Checks will be in the concession stand.
- Scale – Instructional/Pinto – 40$ one Ump – 10U and up – 60$ plate/50$ field
