US Youth Soccer (USYS) is moving from the current calendar-year age system to a school-year-based model (August 1–July 31). This change is designed to align soccer teams with academic grade levels, promoting better social cohesion and simplifying long-term team management.
The New Structure
Starting in the Fall of 2026, age groups will shift to an August 1 – July 31 cutoff. The table below outlines how these shifts compare:

What This Means for NPSC Families
We understand that transitioning to a new system requires planning and flexibility. Here is how New Providence Soccer Club will manage the implementation:
For New / Incoming Players
All new and incoming travel players will be placed according to the new USYS school-year age cutoff.
For Existing NPSC Travel Players
If your player’s academic grade does not align with the new soccer age group, you will have a choice:
Play Up:
Continue playing with your current teammates (maintaining your existing team alignment).
Age-Appropriate: Move to the team that aligns with your player’s academic grade level (the new August–July system).
A Note on the 8th-Grade Transition:
If a player chooses to "Play Up" with their current teammates, please be aware that upon reaching 8th grade, they will be required to join their grade-level team, as older players will move into high school programming. This policy helps avoid the "gap year" issues that currently affect many players born between October and December.
Our Commitment to You
The NPSC Team Formation Committee will review rosters and provide placement recommendations to help families make the best decision for their children. While we are here to guide you, the final decision rests with the family. No placement decisions will be finalized without your approval.
Additionally, please note that all new U8 and U9 teams formed starting in the Fall will be strictly age-appropriate (e.g., U9 teams will consist exclusively of 3rd graders).
We will continue to monitor how this transition is implemented across our peer clubs and leagues, and we will adjust our approach as needed to ensure the best possible experience for our players.
We appreciate your partnership as we navigate this transition together. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your specific situation, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Thank you,
New Providence Soccer Club
