Volunteer Corner

Hello WSLL Family and Friends!

A strong volunteer base is at the center of every successful Little League program. West Springfield Little League relies on hundreds of hours of volunteer effort in addition to the work performed by the WSLL Board of Directors. Accordingly, WSLL charges a refundable volunteer fee to each family (excluding families with players only registered at the 5T and T-ball levels) in order to encourage families to volunteer. The volunteer fee also helps WSLL avoid time consuming fund-raising endeavors that can be frustrating for both players and parents

We are always looking for responsible and enthusiastic individuals to support and coordinate events and activities. We are working to ensure you have all the information you need to sign-up and support. Be on the look out here in the Volunteer Corner for more information in the coming weeks.

Volunteer FAQ

Why does WSLL charge a volunteer fee?

• To successfully run a spring baseball season requires hundreds of hours of volunteer effort above what can be performed by the WSLL BOD

• Accordingly, WSLL charges a refundable volunteer fee to each family (excluding families with players only registered at the 5T and T-ball levels) in order to motivate families to perform that work or to provide additional funds with which the Board can contract out such work

• The volunteer fee also helps WSLL avoid time consuming fund-raising endeavors that can be frustrating for both players and parents.

How can families pay the volunteer fee, and how is it refunded if volunteer work is performed?

• Online Registration: If paying by credit card, the $150 volunteer fee must be pre-paid when registering online.  The full $150 will be refunded later if your volunteer work requirements are met.

• In-Person Session: Families paying at an In Person session can pay the volunteer fee by credit card or check.  13 Volunteer fee checks will be cashed after the season only if the volunteer requirements are not met.  (Please include your player’s name on your check.)

How do I get my refund back?

Volunteer fee will be refunded via the credit card used during registration once your volunteer work requirements are met. Please ensure you sign in when you
volunteer. The volunteer coordinator will processes refunds on a monthly basis.

What are some of the volunteers’ events?
Volunteer events are league-wide events that help with league operations. Events that qualify for volunteer credit are: tryouts, field prep, concession stand, Byronfest,
  umpire, All-Stars, and special events.

What are special projects?

Special projects are projects that are approved by the Volunteer Coordinator and League President.

How long is a volunteer shift?
Most volunteer shifts are 3 hours long and no more than 4 hours.

How many shifts do I need to do to qualify for refund?
In spring, a combination of two 3-hour shifts or 1 field prep session is required except for umpires (see umpire's requirement).
In fall, one 3-hour shift or one field prep is required. For umpires, please see umpire’s requirement

How do I get credit for the hours I have worked?
Once you have signed up for a volunteer event, you must sign-in on the volunteer sign-in sheet to get a credit. If the volunteer sign-in sheet is not available, please try
to get the name of the BOD in charge of the event or any BOD member present for duty the day of your volunteer service for validation.

Where can I find the volunteer sign-in sheet?
The volunteer sign-in sheet can be found in a binder located inside of the concession stand at Byron Park. If the event occurs outside Byron Park, sign-in sheets will be       located at the check-in desk with BOD members.

My spouse is a manager but we never get our volunteer credit.
We do appreciate your service as a manager but WSLL policy required all managers to do at least two shifts of assistant gray hat duty to qualify for volunteer credit. This
is a special requirement and only applies to team managers..

I volunteered as a team parent but didn’t get a volunteer credit back?

We do appreciate those who volunteer to be team parents, CORs, scorekeeper and etc., but WSLL volunteer policy only applies to league-wide events and not one
  team’s operation.

Can I donate my volunteer hours to other families?
Yes, in unforeseen circumstancesyou can donate your volunteer hours by contacting theWSLL volunteer coordinator and provide the proper information. You can also
leave comments on the sign-in sheet regarding the family to whom you would like to donate your hours name, child name and league/level). For example, “Donate
