2024 FALL SEASON ANNOUNCEMENTS

2024 SPRINGFIELD CHALLENGER BASEBALL - SPRING SEASON INFORMATION

Springfield Challenger is Little League Baseball for kids, teens and adults, ages 4 - 50, who have any special needs that preclude them from participating in a mainstream Little League program. Beginning in 1993 with nine ball players, Springfield Challenger will register over 100 players as we enter our 31rst season.

Springfield Challenger offers each player an opportunity to participate in baseball, regardless of skill level - we tailor the game to each player's abilities. We don't count balls & strikes and we don't count outs. Everybody scores each inning and everybody wins. Each player gets the opportunity to play defense, bat and score each inning.  Being on the field is just one of the benefits resulting from playing baseball with us - socialization skills, friendships and a feeling of success are also recognized. Our games are two or three innings, non-competitive games played on Sunday afternoons. For families we offer camaraderie with other parents and siblings and a chance to cheer on each special player and his or her teammates. All players receive uniforms and awards at the end of the spring season. The highlight of each season is our Mother's Day Brunch at the Springfield Hilton for our moms and families.

TEAM GAMES - THIS SUNDAY APRIL 14

Springfield Challenger will have games this Sunday April 14 at West Springfield Little League's Byron Ave. Fields.  Players can come out between 12:30 - 1pm to meet their teammates, coaches, volunteers and pick up uniforms and information for the season.  Check out team schedule below under link for GAME LOCATION & TIMES

Registration Form and Medical Release

Year after year families ask what they can do to help out with Springfield Challenger baseball.  Returning these forms as soon as possible is one of the most important ways you can help.  Even though we accept registrations throughout the season, returning this form is key to determining the number of teams, the number of players on a team, accommodating special requests, scheduling fields for games and ordering equipment and uniforms

If you have questions regarding registrations please contact our registration director, Patti Alf, with any questions

Please mail in your registration form to :    Patti Alf     8810 Dianne Place    Springfield, VA  22152

SPRINGFIELD CHALLENGER VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

“Little League Baseball for Kids, Teens and Adults With Special Needs”

VOLUNTEERS – BUDDY'S

Springfield Challenger Little League Baseball has been serving kids and teens with special needs for over 30 years.  In those years, we have introduced many people to the fulfilling and enriching world of volunteerism.

So many folks are eager to be introduced to the world of volunteering, but would feel more secure doing so in a well trained, structured, supervised setting.  Our BUDDIES will gain an opportunity to experience life from the eyes of a child who is challenged and will understand the community’s responsibility to support persons with developmental disabilities.  It should be emphasized that this is a mutually rewarding experience for the BUDDY as well as the athlete. During the spring season we have high school baseball and softball teams come out to volunteer and this year we’ll be approaching local Little League programs that carry teenage teams to come out.

Please contact Eddie or Logan for more information on how you can make a difference  in a players life.

What is Springfield Challenger Baseball

Springfield Challenger Baseball is a division of West Springfield Little League for players with special needs ranging in ages of 4-50.  It is managed under West Springfield Little League in cooperation with Central Springfield Little League.

We have three divisions:
Little Challenger for kids 4-12
Majors for our teenagers 13-19
Adult division for payers 19-and older

We provide a volunteer-based inclusive baseball program with peer buddy support, in a positive, fun atmosphere with role models for age appropriate behavior. Our program builds self-esteem, confidence, acceptance, as well as an opportunity to establish on-going relationships with others. We also provide opportunities to socialize, learn proper cooperative behaviors, sort out problems and work together as part of a team.

Springfield Challenger Baseball gives our kids a sense of belonging outside of the immediate family.

Spreading the Word for 2024

One of the best things about our Springfield Challenger program is the support we receive from our local Little League programs. We have plenty of room to bring on many more ballplayers and would like to get the word out to more and more families. If you would like to help with making arrangements, members of our staff would love to visit your schools, churches, businesses, etc. and spread the word about what a wonderful time we have during the spring and fall seasons. If you know of anyone or any group that would benefit from Springfield Challenger, please let me know and we would come out to meet and answer any questions about how we could make a difference.

This year we will be sending out Springfield Challenger information flyers to schools throughout Fairfax County, focusing on elementary and middle schools, asking principals and teachers to distribute the information to the special needs population. We are also asking parents to talk with your friends about joining up. We can and will do everything possible to accommodate all requests for players, friends and classmates to participate on the same teams.

Lastly, if you know of a family that would like to come out and try Challenger Baseball, please feel free to bring them out on any Sunday game day. We would love to meet them.

Mother's Day Sunday - May 2024 Special Event

Every year we have a special event planned for the moms, players and families of Springfield Challenger. We reserve the banquet hall at the Springfield Hilton for a wonderful Mother’s Day Brunch complete with a tremendous buffet including an omelet station and pasta station. Other specials will include an ice cream station for the kids plus a DJ and dancing for ALL.

With this tribute to our moms we are hoping for even more families to celebrate Mother’s Day with the Challengers plus give our moms a day to remember.  We’re anticipating a big turnout of players and their families as the accommodations we are setting up allow for up a very special day for our moms.

Springfield Challenger has ALWAYS been family oriented, but instead of just sitting back and playing games on Mother’s Day Sunday, we felt that the day was too special and we would like to offer a tribute to the best part of our lives.

We will have more information as the 2024 Spring season unfolds next year, so expect invitations to go out early in April.
