Stephen grew up playing both high school and club soccer. After graduating from Decatur High School, he played four years at Berry College. Many of Stephen's college teammates were international players who taught him the importance of having a professional approach and attitude toward the game.
After graduating, he began his coaching career at Georgia State University. After a stint with the Nashville Metros, Stephen returned to Decatur HS to coach many teams who went deep into the State Championships, including the 2003 team that took the state title. He currently coaches the TYSA U8 Academy Jr boys while also working as the Varsity Girls' Soccer Coach at Parkview HS. He holds a USSF National C License. Stephen and his wife, Jenine, have four children in the TYSA program.
