Minors

Posted Nov 28, 2018

New in 2019! Cedar Mill Little League added an intermediate division between the AAA and Majors divisions called “Minors”. The Minors division will focus on developing players to make the jump between AAA and Majors.

Minors (ages 10-11) – Typically 4th to 5th Grade

For players born between Sept 1, 2008 and August 31, 2010, this division is geared toward 4th and 5th graders with a few 3rd graders playing. Players are expected to have played one year at the AA or AAA level. Pitching is performed by the players and Little League rules are followed. The catcher position becomes very important at this level as stealing is now allowed. Due to the rosters being formed through a draft, players are not guaranteed to be placed with requested teammates or players from the same school. Coach and teammate requests are not available in AAA, Minors or Majors divisions. Not all players registered for Minors will make a Minors team. Players that are not drafted to a Minors team will be offered a position on a AAA team. Teams will be expected to play and/or practice 3-4 times per week.

This program is for players ages 10-11 (with some exceptions for tested 9 year olds) that are ready for a faster paced, team game, able to grasp the team concept at-bat, and in the field during their Minors Baseball season. Skills and attributes are evaluated by CMLL coaches and Board Members at a league-wide player evaluation session, and players are then drafted accordingly. Please note it is recommended players play two years in the AAA and Minors level, before moving to the Majors level.
Skills and attributes for AAA play include the following.

  • Hitters will have an understanding of the game situation, receive signs from the third base coach, and be able to bunt correctly.
  • Fielders should be able to catch a flyball, and have a good grasp on the angles needed to back-up a teammate.
  • Catchers should have an idea of how to block a pitch in the dirt, and have proper mechanics of throwing a base stealer out.
  • Teams should know how to handle a run-down.
  • Players should be able to make a proper slide into a base.
  • Pitchers will be able to show proper mechanics on their wind-up, and throw properly out of the stretch.
  • Pitchers will begin to learn the importance of changing speeds on their pitches.

Post Season Note: At the end of the regular season, CMLL will field three All Star teams to compete in the District 4 tournaments at the 8-10, 9-11, and Majors (10-12) levels. The winners of these three tournaments advance to the respective state tournaments. For the 8-10 and 9-11 teams, State is the end, but the winner of the State Majors tournament advances to Regionals and eventually to the Little League World Series. The majority of the players for the three All Star teams come from the Majors divisions with a few coming from Minors. District 4 also offers honors tournaments at the 8-10 and 11-12 levels so that players who do not make an All Star team or cannot commit to the timeframe can also experience post season play. These players will come from the Majors, Minors, and AAA divisions.

Post season participation is a unique opportunity for our players, and the expectation is that the tournaments and the practices leading up to the tournaments take priority over other activities, including sports camps, other sports, and vacations. The exact schedule will not be set for some time, but here is last season's schedule as a guideline. Dates vary from year to year.
