Little League Canada offers Softball programs to youth ages 4 to 16 years old. (Softball Age Charts 2021 & 2022)
Utilizing the Age Determinator by Little League International is a fast and easy way to ensure your child is signing up for the proper program.
All softball divisions utilize the age determination date of December 31 / January 1. While the age date aligns with Softball Canada and World Softball Baseball Confederation, Little League permits players an extra year of eligibility within divisions of play
Tee Ball Softball - The Tee Ball program gives 4-7-year-old children and their parents with an introductory experience by creating a safe, caring, and fun activity as they learn the basic skills of the game. Programs may use 50-foot base paths and a 10 "or 11" lower RIF ball (softer).
Minor Softball Divisions – This division may be segmented into one or a combination of Coach Pitch, Machine Pitch, and/or Player Pitch. These programs are for players 7-11 years old; however, players 5 and 6 years old with a year of Tee Ball are eligible for the Coach Pitch or the Machine Pitch divisions. Players use an 11 “ softball and play on a diamond with a 60-foot base path and a 35-foot pitching distance. Clubs may modify some playing rules to assist in player development and fundamental building. Tournament Play is limited at the Minor level because it is an instructional and developmental division. Normally teams only advance to Provincial Tournaments. (No Canadian championship or World Series play is available).
- Coach Pitch is a program for players who bat a baseball that is safely pitched to them by their own coach.
- Machine Pitch is a program for players who bat a baseball that is pitched to them by a machine.
- Player Pitch is a program where players bat a baseball that is pitched to them by an opposing team’s player. This is the first level where player participants begin to pitch to one another.
Major Softball (Little League) is a Little League program where players are ages 9 to 12. This program uses a 12 “ softball and is played on a diamond with 60-foot base paths and measures 40-foot pitching distance. Clubs may begin to implement stealing at the release, the uncaught (dropped) third strike and a courtesy runner for the pitcher and/or catcher with two outs. At this level, the full tournament game is available, meaning the winning Canadian Regional Champion team has the option to attend the World Series tournament in Greenville, NC. In major divisions and above, age-eligible players may duel-roster on teams within different age divisions and have tournament eligibility based on their age. ( EX- a 12-year-old may roster on a Major team and a Junior division team).
Junior Softball is a program for players ages 12-14 years old. The Junior level uses 60-foot base paths and a 43-foot pitching distance. At this level, the full tournament play is available, meaning the winning Canadian Regional Champion team has the option to attend the World Series tournament in Kirkland, Wash.
Senior Softball is a program for players ages 13-16 years old. The senior-level also uses a 12” softball and plays on a 60-foot base paths and a 43-foot pitching distance. Clubs may utilize a designated hitter. At this level, the full tournament game is available, meaning the winning Canadian Regional Championship team can attend the World Series tournament in Roxana, Del.
