CENTRAL YORK YOUTH WRESTLING

Elementary Dual Team

ELEMENTARY DUAL TEAM

What is the Dual Team? The dual team is comprised of members who “wrestle off” for spots just like the junior and senior high school teams. All members of Central York Youth Wrestling are welcome to try out for the team.

What is a “wrestle off”? Based on your child’s weight, he/she will need to wrestle other members of Central York Wrestling and win to earn a spot on the dual team. There are typically around 15 weight classes on a dual team. Please note, age is not a factor in a dual team setting. So, if your child chooses to wrestle off for a weight class, he/she may need to wrestle an older child. Even if your child weighs 50 pounds or less, it is not uncommon for him/her to wrestle a child in grades 4-6.

How does a dual meet work? A dual meet is a type of competition that pits the best wrestlers at each weight class from one team against the best representatives from another. Depending on the outcome of each individual match one team will be awarded team points for the win. Generally speaking, the team score at a dual meet is determined by the outcome of every individual match that was wrestled.

Who is eligible to try out for the Dual Team? Any member of Central York Youth Wrestling is eligible to try out for our team. Please note…if this is your child’s first year, this opportunity may be more than he/she is ready for as they may need to wrestle off against wrestlers with more experience. If you question whether or not your child is ready, please talk to the Head Coach or a Dual Team Coordinator.

DUAL TEAM GUIDELINES

  1. The tournament team will only be comprised of members from the Central York Youth Wrestling Organization.
  2. Wrestlers may elect two weight classes for which they wish to compete.  Each wrestler must list the order of preference that they wish to compete.  No changes will be permitted.
  3. Wrestlers interested in competing for a spot on the roster, will wrestle-off to determine the dual team, prior to the first dual match.
  4. A wrestler may only try out for the second weight class after they are defeated during the wrestle-off in their first choice of weight class.  The second weight preference must have been listed on their original request and cannot be added after the fact.
  5. Wrestlers will weigh-in prior to the wrestle-off, wearing a singlet or shorts and a t-shirt.  Wrestlers must weigh no more than 2 pounds above the weight that they are seeking to compete.  Additionally, wrestlers can only wrestle-off for one weight class above their actual weight class. (ie:  A wrestler weighing 68 would be permitted to wrestle at either 70 or 75).
  6. Once the dual team is finalized, only the coaching staff may make changes to which weight class a wrester competes.
  7.  The dual team coordinators will announce a date(s) throughout the season, where a wrestler may challenge an incumbent dual team wrestler.  When challenging a dual team wrestler, you may only select one weight class to challenge.  The challenger must defeat the incumbent wrestler 2 consecutive times to earn the spot on the dual team.  Should more than one wrestler choose to wrestle off the incumbent wrestler.  Those wrestlers must wrestle each other first in a single elimination bracket to determine the #1 challenger.
  8. Weigh-ins will occur each night of wrestle-offs, to include challenges.
  9. Wrestle-offs will consist of three (3) one-minute periods.  If no winner is determined after regulation, subsequent one-minute periods will follow with the winner being determined by the first takedown.
  10. Wrestle-offs will be refereed, timed and scored by individuals with no interest in the outcome of the match.  Additionally, no person with an interest in the outcome of a match will be permitted in the wrestling room, with the exception of the dual team coordinators, if applicable.
  11. No coaching of any kind is permitted during the wrestle-off.
  12. Any alternate wrestlers will be selected by the dual team coordinators.
  13. Dual team members attending less than 75% of Central York Youth Wrestling Practices will forfeit their spot on the team.
  14. The Central York Youth Wrestling Program does not encourage or recommend cutting weight at any weight class; rather that decision is at the discretion of the parent(s) and wrestler.

DISCLAIMER:  Please carefully consider participation in the Central York Elementary Dual Team, as being a member of the dual team requires a commitment to attend certain events.  If a dual team wrestler misses a dual meet for a reason other than the bereavement of a close family member or the inability to participate due to a significant medical condition, that wrestler will lose their spot on the dual team roster.  That spot will be filled by the wrestler finishing second at that weight during the previous wrestle off.  Should the original wrestler wish to challenge for a spot in the next dual meet, that wrestler will have to defeat the incumbent wrestler twice, as is the case in a regular challenge.
