Wolverhampton Wanderers, from Wolverhampton, England, play in the English Championship. They are one of the most influential clubs in English soccer, being a founding member of the Football League. They also played a huge role in founding the European Cup, now known as UEFA Champions' League. They have won the League Championship (predecessor to the Premier League) 3 times, the FA Cup 4 times and the League Cup twice. The Wolves Academy received English Professional Football's Category 1 status in 2012, the highest level of Academy based on facilities and coaches. Wolves' Academy program has produced many great players including West Bromwich Albion defender Joleon Lescott, and current Los Angeles Galaxy striker Robbie Keane. Their first team has featured Manchester United greats Denis Irwin and Paul Ince, as well as famous soccer commentator Andy Gray.
Central Virginia United's partnership with Wolverhampton Wanderers (nicknamed the Wolves) is multi-faceted. Wolves host an ID camp through CVU, in which players who attend the camp have the opportunity to be selected to the Wolves National Camp. The Wolves National Camp features top players from other Wolves North American partners. From the National Camp, players have the opportunity to be selected to attend a two-week trial at Wolverhampton in England.
CVU has also gained the opportunity to take teams abroad to experience soccer across the pond. Every year, CVU will be taking the U15 Boys and Girls teams on an overseas trip to England. The trip includes training with Wolves staff, playing against local competition, attending professional games, sightseeing, and more!
