History of Lynnhaven Baseball
Est. 1955
William Allen established Lynnhaven Baseball (then known as Princess Anne Little League) over 65 years ago, with the first fields located at the current site of Beach Ford on Virginia Beach Boulevard.
In 1962, Little Neck resident G. Trant bequeathed the current site, 17 acres of land next to Kings Grant Elementary School, to the Little Neck Civic League, with the stipulation that the property be used for local youth sporting activities. Several leagues played there, and by 1970 the groups combined to become Boys Baseball of Lynnhaven, which later became Lynnhaven Baseball.
Now, as long as players meet the age eligibility requirements, anyone can play at Lynnhaven Baseball. Players living within the cities of Norfolk or Virginia Beach may meet eligibility to play for their national tournament team selections for post-season competition play. More than 800 youth ages 4-18 play on the four fields in the spring and fall combined.
Lynnhaven Baseball also offers a Travel/Sunday Select program, called the Wahoos, in addition to the recreational program. Lynnhaven sends postseason teams to compete in either/and the PONY World Series, or the Babe Ruth League Tournament with the majority of those squads will be composed of players from Wahoos teams, and in order to be considered by the sanctioning leagues, those players must play a minimum number of qualifying games in Lynnhaven's Recreational Baseball League. During the spring season, teams will play a schedule of 10 regular-season games. Practices began in March and games began in mid-April. Games primarily occur on Saturdays with some games played on weekdays with teams practicing throughout the week.
Lynnhaven Baseball has been in the community since 1955 as one of the oldest, self-supported non-profit youth baseball organization programs in Hampton Roads. The Lynnhaven Baseball mission is to provide a safe, sanctioned place for children to exercise, socialize and develop skills that will be useful throughout their lives. Boys and girls, ranging in age from 4 to 19 years, get the opportunity to learn the values of teamwork, good sportsmanship, respect for authority, how to win and lose with grace and make lasting friendships along the way.
To help Lynnhaven Baseball meet its mission objectives, it takes the partnership of support from the community both as sponsors and volunteers. Lynnhaven operates year-round in two organized seasons with each season providing the fields, lighting, equipment, uniforms and instruction to the great baseball players of tomorrow. The operating budget consists of expenditures exceeding $165,000 annually. Registration and concession sales income only supplement some of the daily operating costs of a season. Lynnhaven Baseball families rely heavily on the generosity and blessings of the local business community to help cover yearly expenses for maintenance and care for the fields, facility and equipment.
Lynnhaven Baseball, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit provides baseball programs to our community 100 percent by volunteers. For more information about volunteering, registering, or becoming a sponsor, please contact [email protected] or [email protected].
