The Kenwyn Cooper Memorial Scholarship

“Coach Coops” dedicated his life to the game of soccer, a sport he loved.  During his career as a player, he played on the Defense Force as well as the Trinidad and Tobago National Team.  He went on to coach many teams adult teams in T & T and received many honors and awards but his biggest reward, however, was found in his work coaching kids.

He coached teams in Northern Virginia and Richmond before he became the Director of Coaching/Technical Director for Norfolk United Soccer Club.  He later coached teams at Old Dominion Soccer Club.  During his time in Hampton Roads, he coached many teams to successful seasons and taught many players the love of the game.  He also volunteered his time to the Norfolk Department of Recreation to introduce soccer to underprivileged kids.

The quality that set Coach Cooper apart was his unwavering devotion to making sure everyone, no matter their situation, got to experience the joy that is soccer.  He was completely and whole-heartedly devoted to the people that he coached and did everything in his power to make sure everyone had the same opportunities to play the game.   We lost Coach Coops to cancer on August 15, 2014.  This scholarship was created to carry on his legacy.  It is awarded every season to player(s) that have a financial need and demonstrate the ideals Coach Cooper taught; sportsmanship, good character, passion, and a love of the game.
