Grassroots New Referee Certification is Open!
All information about Grassroots New Referee training is found at the CT State Referee Program website. https://www.ctreferee.net
All registration and instructional materials for entry level clinics are done online.
What are the Requirements?
New referees must be at least 13 years of age at the time of certification.
Referees 18 years and older must complete a Background Check and successfully pass the Safe Sport Training through US Soccer. These are requirements to officiate any CJSA sponsored youth competitions. The Background Check is not instantaneous. Once you have submitted your Background Check you will have to wait 5 business days for it to be processed before you can resume your Certification.
Although youth are typically who initially certify, we always need adults (male and female) to get involved as there are only a handful of certified referees eligible to oversee all age groups.
What you can expect for certification training After successful completion of the online training, you will need to register for a Field Training/Test Session. The Field Training/Test Session will be a one-day event, typically scheduled on a Saturday or Sunday, consisting of a three-hour field training session and a two-hour testing session, during which you will be administered the USSF Referee Certification Test. The certification test contains 100 multiple-choice and true/false questions. You will not be able to register for the field session until you complete the online training. You must complete field training and exam on the same day. Expect to stay until the end and do not ask to leave early. The certification is only valid for one year – the year on your badge. Therefore, if you want to continue refereeing, you will need to recertify each year. Recertification is online only.
Uniforms Referees must provide their own uniform and equipment. You can purchase a starter kit for under $50. Official Sports is the official supplier to US Soccer but you may use any supplier. New uniforms are available locally at Scott's Sports, Windsor; Team Sports, Farmington, Farr's Sporting Goods, Manchester; Soccern'Moore, East Hartford; Oakwood Sports Center, Glastonbury. You will not find soccer referee uniforms at Sports Authority and Dick's Sporting Goods. Use code ref10 for 10% off discount online orders at Team Sports. Scheduling of Game Assignments & Pay
Most travel games are played on Saturday and Sunday mornings and afternoons in East Granby. The pay for referees varies between sideline (Assistant Referee) and head (Center) referee assignment. Referees can also work in other towns and at tournaments. Income earned depends on desire, availability and experience.
