2020 NFL Youth Flag Football Update

We know that many of you are eager for the season to start. We’re writing to make you aware of changes to the season due to COVID-19, and to inform you of safety protocols that have been put in place to protect athletes, coaches, and spectators.

On Monday, July 27, the Virginia High School League (VHSL) voted to implement a condensed interscholastic athletics plan for the 2020-2021 school year. This means that competitive interscholastic high school sports will not begin until December 2020. For more on the VHSL decision, visit this link.

Following this decision, we will begin the fall 2020 Flag Football season with team practices only beginning in mid-September. This will allow for safe distancing for athletes and coaches and follows similar training plans that high school athletes will follow this fall. Teams will receive two practices slots weekly to start the season, instead of one practice and one game weekly. As the fall progresses, DPR will evaluate options for mini-round robin tournaments or a shortened competitive season.

We have instituted multiple safety measures to administer a safe season. You can find more information in the 2020 season guidelines or in the FAQ’s for coaches, parents, and athletes. Further information will be presented at the parent and coaches’ meetings that will take place on August 20. Your league commissioner will send out a link to a virtual meeting soon. These meetings will be an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about safety protocols that are being implemented for the 2020 season.

There is still time to register! Registration closes on August 12 at midnight. The late fee for registration has been waived for the 2020 season.

As you know, the situation with COVID-19 is still fluid. Should further changes need to be made to the season, up to and including cancelation, you will be notified and receive a full refund. If participating in practices-only to start the season is not the experience you were expecting, please contact us and we will provide a full refund.

We look forward to seeing you on the gridiron. Should you have further questions please contact Greg Anselene at [email protected] or your league commissioners, Tyler Remerow [email protected] and Patrick Leonard [email protected]
