Equipment
*** We HIGHLY recommend players utilize their own equipment and limit sharing ***
Properly sized equipment is critical for your child's success and safety on the ball field. Please be sure that your child's glove and bat are appropriate for the age division they will be playing. A glove too large may be just as dangerous as one too small or too stiff. A bat too heavy will be difficult to swing and your child may have trouble making contact. Please contact league officials if you need assistance selecting the correct equipment!
League Supplied Equipment:
All players will receive a team uniform that includes a uniform top and a hat.
WDLL will supply each Tee Ball team with a bucket of practice balls, a box of game balls, a team equipment bag, batters helmets, a team bat, ice packs and first aid kit, and a team score book.
Coach Pitch teams will be supplied the same with the addition of Catcher's Equipment and a heart protector for the pitcher.
Minors and above will receive similar team gear, with fewer helmets due to many of the kids having their own.
All gear will have been inspected to ensure that it is in good condition and that it meets Little League/USA Baseball standards.
Player/Parent Supplied Equipment:
We try to keep this to an absolute minimum at the younger levels.
Tee Ball players will simply need their own glove. Many children will have their own pants/belt/cleats, however none are strictly required. Cleats are nice to have because learning how to run in them is a good skill to develop. Tee Ballers may use their own helmets and bats so long as they meet the safety requirements.
At the Coach Pitch level and above, players are expected to have pants and cleats for play. Anyone playing catcher should be wearing a protective cup as well.
Softball players will be expected to provide their own protective face masks when in the field.
For 2024, all WDLL Baseball Players are expected to wear
white
pants with their uniform. All WDLL Softball Players are expected to wear
black
pants with their uniform.
If you find yourself unable to provide these items for your player, please contact a league official and we may be able to assist!
Things to keep in mind...
Undershirts worn by players should generally be white/black or team colors.
Little League made changes to their bat regulations in 2018 implementing new "USA Baseball Bat Standards." All players in the Majors or below are required to use bats that are stamped or stickered with the USA Baseball logo. These rules DO NOT apply to Softball. Coaches will be policing this so be mindful of not using older or otherwise ineligible bats!
More information is available here.
Helmets must meet National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) specifications and bear the NOCSAE stamp/engraving. Most modern helmets will have this, but beware of older equipment.
Sizing of equipment is VERY important to development. All too often, kids step to the plate with a bat that is far to heavy for them or walk onto the field with a glove that is too big or too small. When bat shopping, it's better to err on the lighter side for most developing little leaguers! An excellent bat sizing guide can be
found here!
Gloves are equally important and different sizes should be considered based on age and positions played. A good video on glove sizes can be
found here!
Also, don't forget that softer gloves designed for easy closing at the younger levels may not include adequate padding as your child ages and the ball comes at them faster/harder. Whatever glove you choose, be sure to break in properly!
The type of balls that we use varies per division. Tee Ball players will begin with a "safe-t ball" that is soft on impact, but bounces a bit when it hits the ground. Coach Pitch Baseball and above will use a harder ball that provides less bounce when it hits the ground. Coach Pitch and Minors Softball use an 11" ball, where Majors and above graduate to a 12" ball.
