Woodland High School senior soccer player Josh Benton recently signed to play college soccer for USC Salkehatchie in Allendale, SC next season. Josh is in his second season as a starter for Woodland where he has recorded 3 goals and 2 assist in the Wolverines' first 7 matches. The team is 5-2 this season with one of its losses coming at the hands of the defending state champions' Academic Magnet.
Josh began his career playing JV for Woodland before moving into Varsity his Junior season. "Josh is a great example of what can happen when a player is willing to put in extra work and wait your turn. His first few seasons, he was playing behind some of the best players Woodland has ever had. It is not easy for players to do that and stay motivated, but to his credit he did it, and when he got his opportunity he took full advantage of it. I don't think I have ever seen a player improve as much and as fast as Josh has over the last few years. He is a great kid and I am extremely proud of him." (Former coach Frank Prentiss)
In addition to being a standout soccer player, Josh gives back to the younger generation by officiating and coaching youth soccer in the area. Josh is a certified referee for South Carolina Youth Soccer, and officiates matches in the St. George and Walterboro areas. In addition to officiating, Josh gives what is left of his free time to help coach U10 & U11 girls soccer at the Walterboro Soccer Club working with former coach Frank Prentiss.
