Are You Interested in Being a Referee?
Recreational soccer is a great way to start as a referee. The League participates in CalSouth's Referee Development Program. Anyone who has experience in the game and is willing to take the referee course can be accepted. The minimum requirements to become a referee with the Big Bear Soccer League are: 1) be at least 12 years old, 2) be able to pass a background check, and 3) can withstand the rigors of being on the field.
Once you complete the checklist below, contact [email protected] and provide the required documentation. Once approved, we can start scheduling you to referee games. New referees with be paired with an experienced referee.
Referee Checklist
1. Familiarize yourself with the FIFA Rules of the Game.
2. Complete concussion training.
3. If you are over 18 years of age, you are required to complete a LiveScan Clearance from the Department of Justice. The
League will have LiveScan representatives available at Opening Ceremonies. The cost for LiveScan is $XX.
4. Obtain at least a USSF Grade 9 certification. The Grade 9 is the only all-online option. Choose "California - South" for the
state agency, You should receive an e-mail confirmation of each video module. Contact the League if you cannot get it to
work. USSF certification must be completed each year.
5. Register with CalSouth using these instructions. The cost for CalSouth registration is $40 for Grade 9 and $55 for Grade 98
6. Purchase a pair of black shorts. You are required to wear a referee uniform shirt. We encourage you to purchase your own;
however, the League may have uniform shirts to loan. Check with the Director of Referees.
Grade 8 certification is not required, but highly recommended. While Grade 9 can be completed all online, Grade 8 requires four (4) hours of field training. This can help new referees become more comfortable on the field. Certain tournaments and U18 games require a Grade 8 certification. CalSouth has many referee resources that can help navigate you through this process.
The Head Referee must provide the following at each game:
1. A set of flags.
2. Red/yellow cards and the game report card.
3. Watch or other non-dangling timepiece. Note that cell phones are not permitted to be used for timekeeping.
4. Coin for the coin toss.
The League may have these items to loan. Contact the Director of Referees.
