🙌 Referee Signals

In soccer, referees carry a standard to signal calls. It is almost like sign language — signaling properly is as important as making the right call, because you must carry the correct meaning to players, coaches, and fans on every decision. A referee who signals clearly is a referee who commands the field.

💡 How to Use This Page

Each signal below includes a short description and a link to a video demonstration. Watch each one, practice in a mirror, and build the muscle memory before you step on the field. Clear signals build your credibility and protect you from disputes.

⚽ Center Referee Signals

▶ Start & Restart of Play

Kick-Off

Point to the center circle. Blown with a whistle to start or restart the match after a goal.

▶ Watch Demo

Goal Kick

Point to the goal area. Awarded when the attacking team sends the ball over the end line.

Goal Scored

Point to the center circle to indicate the goal is good and play will restart with a kick-off. Confirm with the AR before signaling.

▶ Watch Demo

Corner Kick

Point to the corner arc. Awarded when the defending team sends the ball over their own end line.

▶ Watch Demo

Throw-In

Point in the direction of the team taking the throw. Awarded when the opposing team sends the ball over the touchline.

⚡ Free Kicks & Penalties

Direct Free Kick

Arm extended and pointed in the direction of the kick. A goal may be scored directly without another player touching the ball.

▶ Watch Demo

Indirect Free Kick

Arm raised straight up and held until the kick is taken and touches another player. A goal cannot be scored directly.

▶ Watch Demo

Penalty Kick

Point to the penalty spot. Awarded when a direct free kick offense occurs inside the defending team's penalty area.

▶ Watch Demo

Advantage

Both arms swept forward and up. Play is allowed to continue after a foul when stopping play would disadvantage the fouled team.

▶ Watch Demo

🚩 Offside & Stoppages

Offside

AR raises flag; center signals indirect free kick in the direction of play. AR indicates position: near side, center, or far side of field.

▶ Watch Demo

Stoppage of Play

Whistle blown and arms crossed or raised. Used for injuries, pitch hazards, or other stoppages that require play to halt immediately.

▶ Watch Demo

Build-Out Line Youth Only

Arms spread wide indicating the build-out line. Used in younger age groups — opposing players must drop behind the line on goal kicks and keeper distribution.

▶ Watch Demo

🟨 Discipline & Substitutions

Warning

A verbal caution issued without a card — the referee speaks directly to the player to correct behavior. No card shown, no record required, but noted mentally.

▶ Watch Demo

Persistent Infringement

Repeated minor fouls by the same player. The referee signals and may issue a yellow card — the pattern of behavior, not a single incident, is the issue.

▶ Watch Demo

🟨🟥 Yellow Card / Red Card

Hold the card up clearly for all to see. Stop play first, identify the player, then show the card. Record name and number. Yellow = caution. Red = ejection — player leaves the field, team plays short. Two yellows = automatic red.

▶ Watch Demo

Take Back Yellow / Red Card

Used to rescind a card that was issued to the wrong player. The card is shown again and waved off, correcting the error before play continues.

▶ Watch Demo

Substitution

Cross the arms above the head and then point to the touchline. Stop play at the next stoppage. Confirm the player number leaving and the player entering with the fourth official or team bench.

🚩 Assistant Referee (AR) Signals

🚩 The Flag Is Your Voice

As an AR, your flag communicates to the center referee — not directly to players or coaches. Signal clearly, hold until acknowledged, and never drop the flag early. Timing and confidence in your signals give the center referee the information they need to make the right call.

▶ AR Flag Technique & Restarts

Incorrect Throw-In

Flag raised to indicate improper throw-in technique — feet in wrong position, ball released incorrectly, or wrong team taking the throw.

▶ Watch Demo

Switching Flag Hands

The flag transfers between hands to indicate direction of play. Always raise and hold cleanly — a fumbled hand switch sends the wrong signal.

▶ Watch Demo

Goal Kick

Flag pointed down at the goal area corner. Signals that the ball crossed the end line off an attacking player and play restarts with a goal kick.

▶ Watch Demo

Ball Past Goal Line

Flag raised and pointed to the corner flag (corner kick) or goal area (goal kick) depending on who last touched the ball. The AR must track possession precisely.

▶ Watch Demo

🚩 AR Offense & Discipline

Free Kick

Flag raised to attract the center referee's attention to a foul or infringement observed from the AR's position along the touchline.

▶ Watch Demo

Offside

Flag raised straight up, held until the center acknowledges. Then lowered to indicate the position: near side (horizontal), center (45° angle), or far side (pointing down).

▶ Watch Demo

Substitution

Flag held across the body at chest height to signal a substitution is being requested. Alert the center at the next stoppage and coordinate the player swap with the bench.
