Every season we welcome a new group of players being evaluated for the first time. Naturally, parents and kids have a lot of questions about how the evaluation works, and not knowing what to expect can make players more nervous than they need to be. To help with that, we’ve put together the short guide below that explains what the day will look like.
This is NOT a tryout. It is an evaluation, and every player will have a team to play on. The purpose of evaluations is to help us determine which level of play is the best fit for your child.
Here’s a simple overview of how our evaluations usually run…
Arrive at RLL 20 minutes before your scheduled start time. For a 9:00am start time you would want to be checking in around 8:40am to get situated and know what field you're on.
Evaluations will include batting and fielding. Pitchers and catchers may choose to complete their evaluations after the main session ends (Saturday only). Catchers must bring their own gear.
After a short round of catch with other players:
Batting:
Batting will be done using the pitching machine. Speeds are as follows:
7–8: 40 mph
9: 45 mph
10: 50 mph
11–12: 55 mph
Each player will receive 5 pitches.
After the 5th pitch, players will run to second base as fast as possible.
Fielding:
Players will field 3 ground balls at shortstop and throw to first base, then receive 3 fly balls in left field and throw to the cutoff.
Position players may leave once their fielding portion is finished. Any player who wishes to be evaluated as a pitcher or catcher will do so at the end.
Pitchers and Catchers:
Pitchers will throw 5 pitches from the mound to the plate. Catchers will receive these pitches and make occasional throws to the bases.
