Parent FAQ

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

Q: How long is the Little League season?
A: Typically, the Little League season starts at the beginning of February for practices, with games actually starting in March going through late May (one-week break for Easter).  Upper divisions continue with post-season tournaments and all-star games into late June and early July.

Q: How many games / practices can we expect?
A: A 13-20-game regular season with at LEAST one practice per week. Sometimes two games per week, sometimes one, depending on the division.

Q: What kind of equipment do I need?
A: At the very least, a good glove. Rubber-molded spikes / cleats would also be a sound investment (not a requirement for T-Ball). Helmets and bats are available for each team to use. If you would like to purchase your own to use, you may do so. However, before purchasing a bat, please visit the Little League link of approved equipment.

Q: Where are the games and practices?
A: Games: If it is a home game it will be held at Estil Clark Park on Fig Lane in Corning. We are part of the CA District 1 Little League, Northern CA Division - within our district are 11 leagues that we could travel to and play (younger teams such as T-Ball do not travel for games). The 11 leagues are: Anderson, Central Tehama (Los Molinos), Cottonwood, East Redding, Foothill (Palo Cedro), Hayfork, Red Bluff, Shasta Dam, Trinity, West Redding, Yreka. Practices: generally practices are held at Estil Clark Park, but coaches are able to hold practices at local schools due to space availability; practice location varies with each team. Generally, each team plays twice a week (one game during the week and one on Saturday) with the older divisions having practices 1-2 days per week.

Q: I registered my child, now what? When will I be contacted? Who will contact me?
A:
The first and most important step is complete! You will be contacted sometime in the middle/end of February by your child's coach. You will not need to do anything until this time.

Q: When do games begin?

A: The opening ceremonies are typically in March at Clark Park - this kicks off the games for the season. We have a parade with all the teams, announcements, and there are usually a few games played later in the day.

Things to consider & remember...

  • Be sure your player is at practice and games on time. Baseball/Softball is a team sport and the team depends on everybody to be working together within the scheduled times.
  • If you're dropping your player off for a practice or a game, please be sure to pick up your player on time. Please do not drop your child off unsupervised for T-Ball and Farm.
  • If you want to help coach, please volunteer!
  • Be supportive at games. Please be positive when speaking about the team, players, coaches, or umpires.
  • Offer to help out. Help set up the fields, help with the equipment, help keeping score, help cleaning up the field. We always need help and always appreciate it!
  • Again this year, all local Little Leagues are required to conduct background checks on Coaches and Board Members who provide regular service to the league and/or have repetitive access to, or contact with, players or teams. More information on this phase in the Little League Child Protection Program can be found here.

Tryouts

This section is intended for players and parents attending their first tryouts. Hopefully this will answer any questions you might have, explain a little bit about how tryouts work, what to expect and why we do it.

Q: When are tryouts?
A: Minors and Majors tryouts are typically held in February. Juniors tryouts are later in the year. T-Ball and Farm do not have tryouts. Dates of tryouts will be posted on our social media accounts, on our website and email.

Q: What to bring?
A: Baseball glove, bat, helmet, cleats, cup, and any other baseball gear your player may need.

Q: What will my player be expected to do?
A: At tryouts we will run the players through a few basic skills assessments where they will attempt do things such as:

  • Attempt to field 3 ground balls then throw the ball from shortstop to 1st base.
  • Attempt to field 3 fly balls in the outfield then throw the ball back into the infield.
  • Hit (either off tee, soft toss or live pitching).
  • Run the bases, or do a timed run.
  • Pitch off the mound for those players interested in pitching. Pitching is not required.

Q: Why do we do tryouts?
A: Juniors, Majors and Minors teams are all formed by a draft by the team managers.  We run the draft in order to provide evenly matched competitive teams and to keep kids safe by having kids with similar skill levels playing together.

Q: What are the managers looking for?
A: Based on what they see at tryouts managers make a general assessment of the player’s baseball skill level relative to other players in the same age group. Based on their assessment they will draft their teams for the regular season from the players available to fill the slots on each team.
