About Us

We Are Pioneer

In 1952, Pioneer Baseball Softball League Inc (recognized locally as Pioneer, Pioneer Baseball League, or PBSL) was created by local business owners who wanted to make a difference in the lives of the youth in their community. Today, Pioneer is fully chartered by Babe Ruth League, Inc. and offers baseball for youth between the ages of 4-15 in the Cal Ripken and Babe Ruth divisions.

OUR NAME:
The founding members of our league wanted to do things differently. Because of that, they considered themselves to be Pioneers -- and thus, the Pioneer Baseball League was formed with that name and in that spirit. The “Pioneer” name was certainly fitting when it was founded, and its traditions, carried through the years, make it just as fitting today.

LET EVERYONE PLAY: During the 1950s and 60s, when other leagues turned girls and minorities away, the Pioneer welcomed them. In fact, one of our core values is, and has always been, for any kid who wants to play the game of baseball, to let them play. Many leagues had set numbers for teams and rosters before the call to register for the season even went out, and when those roster slots were filled, everyone else was turned away. Not at Pioneer! What was true then remains true today. Any kid who came to Pioneer -- and who comes today -- was and still is welcome to play.

COACHES: What a privilege it is to coach! One of the core strengths of our leagues are the men and women who volunteer to coach our young players in baseball and in life.

COMMUNITY: Parents and local community members are the backbone of Pioneer. As a solely volunteer run 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, these dedicated individuals work tirelessly to fundraise, engage with local officials, and offer their time, talents, and energy to make Pioneer one of the cornerstone organizations in the greater Alexandria community for over 70 years.
