Becoming a Grassroots Referee

Effective July 1, 2019, US Soccer introduced the "Grassroots Referee" to replace the former grade 7 (adult amateur), grade 8 (youth competitive) and grade 9 (recreation referee). All referees previously certified as a grade 7, grade 8 or grade 9 referee will become a certified Grassroots Referee (subject to completion of yearly re-certification class). Any new referees seeking certification to referee youth or adult amateur games will be certified directly as a Grassroots Referee.

Becoming a new Grass Roots referee requires the candidate:

1. Be a minimum of 13 years old Candidates must be a minimum 13 years of age when creating their online account.
2. Complete the Online Grassroots Referee Course The online course is a 4.5 hour e-learning experience that prepares candidates for their assigned tasks and responsibilities as a Grassroots Referee.
3. Complete an In-Person Grassroots Course (aka Fields Clinic) Cost: $130. The Field Clinics are held throughout New Jersey. Locations, dates, and times are posted as sessions are scheduled. The cost Includes US Soccer licensing and liability insurance, and a US Soccer Referee uniform and Starter Kit

5. Complete an online background check (Age 18 or over only) Cost: $30. Conducted online and good for a 2 year period.

Although Morris United Soccer Club does not require it's recreation referees to be certified, it is highly encouraged. Only certified referees may referee competitive (travel) youth matches.
