COVID-19 Update: July 23rd

To our Wallowa Valley soccer community,

Thank you for registering your player and/or volunteering for the upcoming 2020 season.  We really appreciate your support of Wallowa Valley Soccer during this uncertain and ever-changing time.

The Wallowa Valley Soccer Board is developing our return-to-play plan in cooperation with Oregon Youth Soccer Association and local health officials.  This return-to-play plan will communicate our framework for managing COVID-19 transmission risk during the soccer season.  An underpinning principle of this plan is that risk will be managed as a soccer community; players, parents/guardians, volunteer coaches, and volunteer league administrators will each play an essential role this fall.

Guidance from the following organizations will provide the basis of our return-to-play plan:  Our parent organization Oregon Youth Soccer Association (OYSA), the Oregon Heath Authority (OHA), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and local health officials.

One of the most commonly asked questions is whether coaches and players will be required to wear a mask.  If the current requirements apply when practices start, the answer is yes.  According to OHA, starting July 24: Children age 5 and up are required to wear a mask, face shield or face covering. Face coverings are now required when exercising indoors, plus outdoors when you can’t physically distance.  Whether these requirements apply for coaches and players during gameplay is uncertain, and we will provide updates as we learn more.

We will share our return-to-play plan with you as soon as it's developed and reviewed by our local health partners.  We also ask for your patience as we learn and try to navigate this situation over the next few months.

One is clear: we want kids to play.  Despite the added complication and discomfort of our current reality, soccer is a valuable physical and social outlet that our players and community needs right now.  It will not be 'normal', and it will require all of us working together, but we will do all we can to provide a quality and safe experience this fall.  We are grateful for your engagement and continued support of Wallowa Valley Soccer.
