 Basketball Rules 


1.Practices:  

  • Rookie:   2 – 30 min. practices a week

  • Freshman:  2 - hour practices a week

  • JV:  2 - Hour practices a week

  • Varsity:  2 - hour practices a week

2.Ball size:

  • Rookie:   27.5

  • Freshman:  27.5

  • JV Boys / JV Girls:  28.5

  • Varsity Boys:  29.5 / Varsity Girls:  28.5

3.  Rim Height:  

  • Rookies:  8’

  • Freshman:  8’6

  • JV:  9’

  • Varsity:  10’

4.  Free-throw line

  • Rookie:  8’

  • Freshman:  8’

  • JV:  10’

  • Var:  12’

5.  Number of Players:  

  • Rookie:  this division will play 4 on 4

  • All other divisions:  will play standard 5 on 5

6.  Game Time:  

  • Rookie:  4 - 6 minute running clock quarters.  Clock will only stop at the 3 min mark for subs.  

  • Freshman:  4 - 6 minute running clock quarters.  Clock will only stop at the 3 min mark for subs.  Will also stop for Free-throws.  

  • JV:  4 - 6 minute running clock quarters.   ONLY stops for time-outs and free throws, unless it’s the last 2 minutes of the 4th quarter and the score is within 10 points.    Last 2 minutes of the 4th Quarter, then the clock stops every time the official makes a call or the ball goes out of bounds.

7.  Halftime:  

  • All Divisions;  There will be 5 minutes for halftime.  

8.   Scorers Table: Clock

  • Kept by ;the Visiting team in all divisions.  

9.  Scorers Table:  Bookkeeper: Kept by home team in all divisions.  

  • Rookie:  No score is kept at this level.  Instead bookkeeper is responsible for ensuring that all players have played at least 2 quarters.  

  • Freshman:  Score will be kept.  Also must keep track of player fouls and team fouls.   Teams will be allowed 2 time outs per half. They do not carry over.  

  • JV:   Score will be kept.  Also must keep track of player fouls and team fouls.   Teams will be allowed 2 time outs per half. They do not carry over.  

  • Varsity:   Score will be kept.  Also must keep track of player fouls and team fouls.   Teams will be allowed 2 time outs per half. They do not carry over.  

  • Bookkeepers are also responsible for keeping track of the possession arrow.  It is switched after every jump ball and once at half time and at the quarters.  

10.  Player Fouls:  

  • Rookie:  Fouls are not kept track of, but if an athlete continues to foul after being corrected by coaches, at coaches discretion they can be taken out of the game.  

  • All other divisions:  5 personal fouls. 7 team fouls results in 1 & 1.  10 team fouls results in bonus.  

11.  Playing time:  

  • Rookie:  All athletes need to play 2 full quarters

  • Freshman:  All Athletes need to play 2 full quarters. 

  • JV:  All athletes need to play 1 full quarter

  • Varsity:  All athletes need to play 1 full quarter.  

12.  Defense:  

  • Rookie: At the beginning of each quarter, coaches are asked to match their kids up according to skill. (bibs will be provided for games).  Athletes are required to stay with their assigned man. Concept/Focus: Stay between your man and the basket.  

  • Freshman:  At the beginning of each quarter, coaches are asked to match their kids up according to skill. (bibs will be provided for games).  Athletes are required to stay with their assigned man. No full court. Pick up at half court. Concept/Focus: Stay between your man and the basket / Stay between your man and the ball.  

  • JV:  All teams are required to play man-to man defense.  No pressing until the last 2 minutes of the 2nd and 4th Quarter.  Concept /Focus: Talking about screens, helping on screens, boxing out.  

  • Varsity:  All teams are required to play man-to-man defense.  No pressing until the last 2 minutes of the 2nd and 4th Quarter.  Concept/Focus: Defensive position at all times. Talking on Screens.  Boxing out and Outletting the ball.  

  • Absolutely NO Zone in any division at any time.  

13.  Get back rule:  

  • All Division:  All divisions are required to get back after the other team has secured a rebound.  For the first 2 games, the Rookie and Freshman divisions will be taught to allow the other team to get back before they are allowed to fast break the ball.  However, starting the 3rd game of the season, teams will no longer have to wait on the other team to get back. They can fast break. JV and Varsity can fast break all season.  Athletes must learn to get back to the lane.  

13.  Offense:  

  • Rookie:  At this level we need to be teaching dribbling without traveling and trying to look up and pass.  We need to be teaching athletes how to get open without the basketball.  

  • Freshman:  Focus on catching the ball and squaring up BEFORE we dribble.  Look up for open teammates. Triple Threat. Save our dribble to attack the basket.

  • JV:  Basic on ball and cross screens are allowed.  Teach how to set a screen correctly and how to roll off that screen.  

  • Varsity:  All screens are allowed.  Teach how to balance and run the floor for a fast break and how to set up an offense from there.  

13.  Overtime:   If the score is tied at the end of regulation play,  overtime periods of 2 minutes each will be played until there is a winner at the end of such 2-minute period.


14.  Coaches / Officials

  • Rookie:  1 coach from each team will be on the court at all times.  Keep in mind there is no referees at this level and you as coaches must help, correct, and TEACH the game.  

  • Freshman:  No coaches will be on the floor during the game.  Allow the officials to help the kids.  

  • JV:  No coaches will be on the floor during the game.  

  • Varsity:  No coaches will be on the floor during the game.  

  • All divisions:  there will be absolutely NO haggling of the officials.  This is about and for the kids. Do NOT make this about you as a coach.  

15.  Equipment:  

  •  Players are to wear gym shoes and are not allowed to have jewelry or hard hair accessories on for safety reasons.  A child wearing glasses needs to have a strap to keep the glasses from falling off.
