We bring people of all ages all over Southern Humboldt County to play, coach, umpire, cook all for the love of our children and the love of the game.  We have coaches and volunteers who were once players on the same fields. SHLL players have moved on to higher levels of play including high school championships, college teams, as well as local and regional adult leagues.

We are all volunteers and nonprofit.  Our league is 100% supported by the community.

Wood Field was donated to the SHUSD by the Wood family to be used by the youth of our community for sports.  While the SHUSD owns the property, the various youth athletic organizations such as SHLL and SHYSL, maintain the fields and infrastructure necessary to keep our kids playing ball.  When the property was first donated, it was an unusable lot covered in berry briars and brush. A group of local parents brought their heavy equipment and tools in to clear the land so that it could be utilized by the community.  Over the years, the infrastructure has grown by adding a snack shack, dugouts, fences, batting cage, and storage. Pam Van Meter once told me that she started the snack shack by bringing a basket of snacks to her son’s game and selling them in the stands to make some extra money for the league.  When the need outgrew her basket, a snack shack was built and has since been a necessary funding source for the league. The original scoreboard for Wood Field was replaced in 2014 when we could no longer order parts for it to keep it working. The league reached out to Dazey’s Supply for a donation to purchase a new one.  They contributed $6500 to cover the purchase and installation of the scoreboard we use now. Their only stipulation was that it included a sign with their name that says “How we play matters…”. In the beginning of SHLL, the majors teams were regional Redway team, a Lost Coast team, a Casterlin team, and a Weott team. Games and practices were held at the respective locations.  Over the years as players came and went, it became necessary to centralize and consolidate those teams to what we have now- 4 teams that play and practice in Redway. SHLL continues to thrive year after year with the help and commitment of our community.
