The Mission of LAA Basketball

The mission of our league is to promote basketball in a climate of fun and discipline where each player grows in skills, sportsmanship, and competitiveness.

The Lanier Athletic Association is the feeder program to Lanier High School. The Lanier Cluster includes Lanier HS, Lanier MS, Sugar Hill Elementary, Sycamore Elementary, and White Oak Elementary. The Lanier Athletic Association is a Gwinnett County approved recreation association catering to our Lanier Cluster youth.

Assessment of skills will take place during the month of October 2023 to ensure teams are equally competitive. Team size averages 8 or 9 players to ensure each player plays at least two quarters of a game.

Practice begins in late October and will be held twice per week at Lanier Cluster Schools, however due to COVID-19 this is subject to change. Games begin in November and will be played at the Sugar Hill E-Center, cluster schools and George Pierce Park . There will be one game per weekend (sometimes 2) although in some cases a team may play a game during the week if schedules require, subject to change due to COVID-19.

The season concludes in early February with a tournament to determine the champion of each age bracket.

Frequently Asked Questions About LAA Basketball

Who can play in the LAA league?
LAA is open to any child age 5 through 14 (age as of September 1st). You do not have to live in the Lanier cluster nor Gwinnett County. However, there is an additional $90 charge per player for any child not residing in Gwinnett County and this will be verified by Gwinnett Parks and Recreation Department.

How much does it cost?
The registration fee is: $200 for the first child and $185 for each additional child from the same family. There will be no refunds processed after evaluations have commenced.

How do I register my child?
You must register online. Registration is open from early September thru mid-October.  Payment is by credit card only for online registration.  If payment is not made at registration, a check must be brought the day of evaluations.

When are evaluations?
Evaluations will be held at Sugar Hill E-Center in the middle of October for 8U and up age groups.  Teams will be selected the next week and coaches will contact you during the week. This is not a tryout, simple an evaluation of the players current skills.

How do I sign up to be a coach?
You can sign up to be a coach or assistant coach when registering your child online.

What age groups do you have?
We have the following age groups:

5/6 - Coed

7/8 – boys and girls

9/10 – boys and girls

11/12 – boys and girls

13/14 – boys and girls

How long are practices? (Subject to change due to COVID-19)
Practices are an hour long. Teams will typically practice Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday. Practices will be held at Lanier cluster schools.

When are games played? (Subject to change due to COVID-19)
Games are usually played on Friday evenings or Saturdays at George Pierce Park and E Center in Sugar Hill for home games.  Away games will be played at the surrounding Rec programs courts. Some games may be at alternate locations depending on availability of the gyms.

How long are the games?
Games are 32 minutes (eight minute quarters with a running clock) and a short half time. Expect roughly 50 minutes total.

What if my child makes the GBL or middle school team and I have already registered?
Any player that registers to play at LAA can receive a refund if they show proof that they made one of the teams listed above. We encourage you to register early in the event that you do not make a school team since registration is on a first come-first serve basis, and you are not guaranteed a roster spot in the recreational league if any age group is already full when you register. If you register early and you do make a team, LAA will refund your registration fee.

How many players are on a team?
Teams are kept as small as possible to allow more playing time for each child.  Teams need a minimum of seven players but can have as many as nine.  Our experience is that eight players per team is a good balance.

My child is six but really wants to play basketball and you didn't have enough at the 5/6 age group.  Can I sign him up for the 7/8 age group?
While we prefer kids play within an age appropriate group, we understand that some kids may be more advanced at an earlier age and would compete effectively.  If you wish to sign up a child for basketball who currently does not meet the age requirements, please contact the Director of Basketball and we will evaluate on a case by case basis.

How do I get selected for all stars?
Players for all stars will be nominated by each head coach in mid-December.  Selections will be held in early January.

What are some key dates during the year?
A complete calendar can be found on the website. The dates are subject to change.
