All of Ashland Soccer Club's head coaches, assistants, and team managers must be cleared as a volunteer to be on the field. Here's what you need to do:
BACKGROUND CHECK
Sign into (or create) your Blue Sombrero account.
https://clubs.bluesombrero.com/Default.aspx?tabid=412032
Sign up there to be a volunteer – they will ask you for info so you can begin to get cleared to coach via a background check. The background check can take as little as a few days or as long as several weeks – I will keep in touch to let you know when your background check is cleared.
SAFESPORT TRAINING
New and returning coaches need to complete a SafeSport Trained Course (or refresher) each year.
**if you coached in the fall, you are good to go for spring**
New coaches will need to create an account, then take SafeSport Trained, which is about 90 minutes. The best way to access this is from your Blue Sombrero volunteer page. It will have a list of things to update, including a SafeSport certificate (you can ignore the other things). Check the box next to SafeSport and click “Renew & Update.” A pop up box will open with a link to the SafeSport page.
If you don’t want to access the site from your Blue Sombrero volunteer page, you can also click this link to sign up.
Returning coaches can login, and then take either Refresher 1, Refresher 2, or Refresher 3. (You do not need to take more than one refresher). If you took the original SafeSport Trained last year, you will take Refresher 1. If you took Refresher 1 last year, you would take Refresher 2, etc. However, if you took Refresher 3 last year, the cycle starts over and you must take the original SafeSport Trained this year.
Once you have finished your SafeSport training, I always recommend downloading your certificate just in case it does not populate automatically in OYSA. Here are the instructions to download your certificate: https://uscenterforsafesport.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Certificate.pdf
COACHING LICENSE
Starting this year all coaches, regardless of level, will need a license to be on a roster in an OYSA League. (Team Managers do not need this)
NEVER BEEN LICENSED
If you have never been licensed, go to https://learning.ussoccer.com/coach and create an account. You will be able to see all the options for coaching licenses. At the very minimum, a Grassroots License is needed. There are courses both online and in person (in person courses/dates here: https://oregonyouthsoccer.org/coaches/coaching-licenses/ ).
This is a 2-step process. FIRST, you need to take the free intro course – “Introduction to Grassroots Coaching.” Once you have finished this 20 minute online module, THEN you will be eligible to take one of the Grassroots Coaching pathway license courses (each one costs $26.02). See below for which licensing course you need:
Grassroots:
4v4: U6, U7, U8 (K-2nd)
7v7: U9, U10
9v9: U11, U12
11v11: U13+
PREVIOUSLY LICENSED W/ US SOCCER
To check to see if you have a license with US Soccer, log into your account and check to see if your license is listed in your profile. If so, it will automatically populate onto OYSA’s system and you don’t need to do anything else.
PREVIOUSLY LICENSED W/ OTHER ORGANIZATION
Create a profile in the US Soccer Learning Center and add it there by clicking the link to “Add A License.” You'll have to verify a copy of it.
