Travel Soccer — FAQ

1. What is competitive (comp) youth soccer?

Competitive soccer is a more advanced level of play than recreational soccer. Players are selected through tryouts and compete in higher-level leagues and tournaments. The focus is on skill development, teamwork, and performance. NECONN belongs to CJSA (Connecticut Junior Soccer Association), comprised of individual clubs throughout the state. We play against clubs in the Northeast District (NED) and in the Rhode Island Super Liga.

2. Who can play competitive soccer?

Players typically range from ages 8 to 14. Tryouts are held for U8–U15 age groups. Currently some age groups have multiple teams and some do not — availability varies by season.

3. How do tryouts work?

Players are evaluated by coaches on technical skills, game awareness, athleticism, and attitude. Selection is based on performance and team needs.

4. What is the time commitment?

Travel teams practice twice per week with one game per weekend. Attendance at both practice and games is required. Half of all games are played on local NECONN fields — the other half are away games, typically no more than an hour's drive. Frequent opponents include Stafford, Vernon, WAM, RHAM, and teams across the Rhode Island border.

5. What are the costs involved?

When you try out for a NECONN Travel Team, you are committing to a full year of play. Note that some players who try out do not make the team. The travel soccer fee is $235 for the year, with an approximate uniform cost of an additional $50–$100. NECONN has partnered with NOW to offer scholarships to players who may need financial assistance.

6. What are the differences between travel and recreation soccer?

Recreation soccer focuses on fun and is a good fit for all players — kids play at their own pace with equal participation.

Travel soccer is for players seeking additional coaching and competition who want to continue building their skills. Our Travel Program builds a strong foundation for players looking to play Middle School or High School soccer.

7. How much playing time will my child get?

In recreation soccer, playing time is equal for all players. In competitive play, each player will receive some playing time in each half at the discretion of the coaches. Note that travel players may play recreation soccer at no additional cost for extra playing time.

8. Are there cuts at tryouts?

Depending on the number of roster spots available, there may be cuts. NECONN is open to fielding two teams per age group if numbers support it — volunteer coaches would be needed.

9. What is expected of parents?

Parents are the positive reinforcement behind the children. Every effort should be made to get your child to practice and games. Parents must follow the code of conduct and properly abide by its rules.

NECONN has adopted a Zero Tolerance policy in the officiating of games — improper behavior will affect the team. Each parent is expected to applaud the efforts of ALL children on the field. Win or lose, when a child gives their best effort, that is all anyone can ask. They should always hold their heads high — and parental approval is what they are playing for.
