Bluefield Area Little League (B.A.L.L) - WV

Frequently Asked Questions

We have put together some of the common questions that we have been asked.

Is our Bluefield Area Little League governed by Little League International (LLI)?

Yes, we follow LLI’s rule books for baseball and softball play.

My child is X years old; what division will they play in?

Please see “Division of Play” on the main drop-down tab for more information. Click here for age charts

Can I request a specific coach or for my child to be with his or her friends?

In certain situations, this is possible.  For all T-Ball teams, these requests are usually granted.

For the older divisions, Coach Pitch, Minors, and Majors, teams are assembled via a draft to ensure they are even.

All siblings in the same division will be placed on the same team unless specified. All Team Manager and Assistant Managers children will be matched with those managers well.

My child plays on the Middle School team. Can they play for B.A.L.L. too?

Yes, but per WV rules, not until after the Middle School team has completed their season.

Please note: you MUST fill out a registration form with B.A.L.L. before our registration window closes to play.

Do you require fundraising?

No, there is no fundraising requirement. However, when we do have fundraising activities, participation and spreading the word is appreciated.

Do I have to volunteer?

We are not forcing anyone to volunteer. But please remember that our league is 100% run by volunteers.  We cannot run without them.  These volunteers are parents of our kids who care about their development and want to assist.  We understand that everyone has a lot going on and may be unable to help much.  Any help is appreciated, even for an hour a season!  If we do not have volunteers, then we must hire paid services, which increases registration and concession prices

Do you offer refunds?

100% of the registration money goes to run the league, so this money gets spent fairly quickly after registration closes for all of the items needed for the season.  Having said that, generally, we cannot offer a refund.  If there is an extenuating circumstance, please email [email protected] and we will take it to the board to discuss.

Are uniforms included?

Yes, a hat and shirt are included in the registration fee.  Teams typically try to get one of their employers to sponsor a team that helps pay for uniform upgrades that include pants, socks, and belts.

What equipment does my child need?

You need to supply a glove. Cleats are not required, tennis shoes are fine. It is at you're own discretion when if/when to switch to molded cleats. Metal cleats are not permitted. We supply bats and helmets. If you are purchasing your own softball helmet, it is recommended to get one with a face mask.

My child wants to play, but we just can't afford it. Do you offer any assistance?

One core value of B.A.L.L. and Little League International is that no child should be left behind and not play because of the cost.  We will work with you and figure out a way for your child to play.  We will never let a child sit on the sidelines because of money.  This is one reason why the Little League International program is so great and better than any independent league.  Please contact us at [email protected] if you are experiencing hardship.

My child wants to play, but he/she has other sports, and we may have conflicts.

Children should play multiple sports; it makes them better athletes all around.  It's also very important that they try as many sports as they want so that they know what they love to do. We do try not to schedule our opening day with, say, East River Soccer.

I want to coach, but I do not know how. Can someone help me?

Yes, we are all about teaching, both kids and parents.  Our board has members who have coached for many years. We will help you get started and give you some resources to guide you and help you succeed. Do not let that be a reason not to volunteer.

What days are games and practices, and where?

Another popular question.  Games are typically played on Saturdays and one weeknight.  These can vary based on the division, however, especially if we are playing other Little Leagues (typically, we try to coordinate games with Bluefield-VA, Bland, Tazewell, and Princeton). Once this is finalized, we will communicate it to you.

Two practices per week are scheduled during the pre-season at our fields only. Additional practices after games have begun are at the discretion of the coach.  Do not worry if you miss a practice or two.  This is not a stressful environment, and it is about having fun and enjoying the game, but also learning.

What do I need to do as a team parent?

First, you must fill out a volunteer form with a background check. Team parents help with organizing the kids on the team. Whether it’s with practices, “herding cats” in the dugout, or enforcing that the grounds are kept clean – your involvement is very much appreciated.

What do I do if I am not getting the proper information from my child's coach?

We need to know if there are any issues with a coach.  We want to make sure everyone is enjoying their season and is getting all the information delivered in a timely manner.  If there is an issue with a coach, please email [email protected] and put "Issue with the team" in the subject line.  We will address it as soon as we can.

Will there be tournaments and/or All-Stars?

Our goal for the 2024 season is to have both.
