FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

SEASON DATES -

COMPETITIVE: Season begins in October runs into March.

YOUTH REC: Season begins in November runs through Feb

HS REC: Season begins in December runs into early March

HOW OLD DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO PLAY?

Academic Year:  For Recreational ball - Grades 3-12  For Competitive ball - Grades 4-8

WHAT IF MY CHILD IS HOME-SCHOOLED AND IS ACADEMICALLY AHEAD OF CHILD'S AGE IN PUBLIC SCHOOL?

You can only be involved in TYBA if your child is eligible to attend public school in the 3rd grade at the earliest.

IF MY CHILD WOULD LIKE TO BE CHALLENGED MORE, CAN THEY PLAY UP A GRADE?

No, your child must remain with his/her grade level.

IS THERE ANY OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE MY CHILD PLAY IN A MORE COMPETITIVE SITUATION?

Yes, we do offer competitive teams for boys and girls from 4th to 8th grades.  These teams require tryouts and play anywhere from 30 to 50 tournament games a year.  There are additional costs when playing competitive basketball.  See the Competitive Page for more info.

CAN PARENTS OR SPECTATORS WATCH THE COMPETITIVE TRYOUTS?

Unfortunately, we do not allow spectators to the tryouts.  Our goal in this situation is not to be secretive, but to lessen the pressure that the student players feel when trying out for a select team.  The more spectators, the more difficult it is for players to relax and play to the best of their ability.  The only people allowed at the competitive tryouts are the players, non-parent coaches, TYBA board members, the high school coaching staff and designated player evaluators.

CAN A COMPETITIVE TEAM HAVE MORE THAN 10 PLAYERS?

According to our organizational by-laws 10 players is the recommended count on a competitive team any more or less requires a very unique situation and board exception.

HOW MANY GAMES DO THE RECREATIONAL TEAMS PLAY IN A SEASON?

YOUTH:  Starting in December we play weekly on Saturdays until the end of February. TYBA is part of the South Metro Recreational League (SMRL) which consists of 7+ organizations.  Over those 2 and half months, TYBA players could see over 10 games for the season.

HS REC:  Boys teams play only Tualatin opponents during season and may interlock with Sherwood for March Madness tourney. Girls play Tigard & Sherwood throughout the season and may interlock in March Madness tourney.

DO YOU HAVE TO TRYOUT FOR RECREATIONAL TEAMS?

We have an Evaluation Day in order to help coaches assess the current ability of the available athletes and be able to intelligently draft players to keep the teams fairly balanced. If a player is unable to attend Evaluation Day, the player will be picked at random to give the teams equal opportunity in that situation.

WHAT IF I LIVE IN THE TIGARD SCHOOL DISTRICT, CAN MY CHILD PLAY IN THE TYBA IF THEY ARE GOING TO SCHOOL AT A TUALATIN SCHOOL?

You can play in our Recreational program for TYBA if you live outside of the Tualatin High School boundaries.  However, no player living outside of the Tualatin High School boundary may play competitive basketball on any of our TYBA teams regardless of the situation.

WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE A CREDIT CARD, CAN I STILL REGISTER ONLINE?

We accept check payments to our TYBA PO Box.

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED WITH THE TYBA?

There are many ways a person can get involved and help out.  We are always looking for people who want to coach and work with the kids directly. Another way is by being a team parent and helping plan snacks, disperse information, and plan end-of-the-year parties. Serving on the TYBA Board of Directors is another way to get involved.  From scheduling to keeping track of the finances, ordering uniforms to coordinating referees, promoting the TYBA in our community to helping out with the player evaluation gatherings, TYBA board positions are ultimately a group of individuals who care about kids and put their care into action by getting involved.

WHAT IF I HAVE A CONCERN ABOUT SOMETHING THAT HAPPENED IN A GAME?

The best thing to do is to contact the Vice President who is overseeing the respective program. See our Contact page for an email link to the correct person.

ARE THE RULES OF PLAY MADE AVAILABLE?

Yes, check our Coaches page to see some useful links, including the rules for HS Rec and Youth Rec.

HOW DO I FIND THE LOCATIONS FOR THE DIFFERENT GYMS?

When your team's schedule has been announced there will be a link associated with the game.  Or, you can Google it!

CAN MY CHILD REGISTER AFTER THE DEADLINE?

For Recreational basketball, yes, however your child will be put on a waiting list and cannot be assured of a spot on a team.  If your child does not get on a team, you will be entitled to a full refund.

WILL MY CHILD GET A CHANCE TO PLAY, EVEN IF THEY HAVE NEVER PLAYED BASKETBALL BEFORE?

Many kids who play in the TYBA have not ever played organized basketball. Because we are helping youth learn and play the game of basketball, we invite kids to play no matter what their ability level.  At the recreational level, we try to keep our team sizes at 7-8 players so kids get a chance to play a MINIMUM of 2 full quarters or each and every game.

WHAT IF MY CHILD TRIES OUT FOR A COMPETITIVE TEAM AND DECIDES NOT TO PLAY AFTER MAKING THE TEAM AND STARTING PRACTICE, CAN I GET MY MONEY BACK?

Unfortunately you cannot.  The competitive teams depend on each and every player in order to keep up the intense schedule and weekend tournaments.  When players leave during the season, expenses have already been incurred that require us to keep the initial registration fee.

WHEN DOES REGISTRATION BEGIN?

September 1st.

CAN I GET A REFUND IF MY CHILD DECIDES NOT TO PLAY?

There can be many factors that go into that process and will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

MY CHILD WOULD LIKE TO PLAY WITH A CERTAIN PERSON OR COACH FOR YOUTH REC, IS THAT POSSIBLE?

Only if they are drafted on the same team. There are no pairings to accommodate such requests.

ARE SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE?

Absolutely!  The TYBA will never keep a player from playing due to financial reasons. All of those requests are made directly to the President.  The information is kept highly confidential.  If you are in need, or you are aware of someone who may need some help, please download and complete the application from the Registration tab.
