Thunderbird Little League started in the fall of 1963. It was the third Little League in the Albuquerque area.
The League operates on an all volunteer basis with control vested in the Board of Directors.
There are approximately 200 boys and girls ranging in age from 4 years old to 15 years old playing baseball and softball. Our main permanent complex is located at Bryn Mawr and Comanche NE. The complex was started in 1969. The main complex currently consists of 4 grassed fields, enclosed by chain link fences and has batting cages and a concession stand. The fields are constantly being improved as funds are available. All baseball and softball division games except the Junior and Senior baseball divisions are played at this complex. The baseball Junior and Senior baseball divisions play at our McKinley Middle School complex located at the corner of Comanche and Monroe NE.
The league operates on funds from the annual league fundraising sales, fiesta, concession receipts, sponsors, and monies allocated by state funding. A rebuild of our main complex began in November 2003. Our teams played sandlot ball on dirt fields until the spring of 2007 when with the help of state funding as well as additional funding assistance from city Counselor O’Malley, we were able to place irrigation and sod down for our children to play on grass fields.
It is the people who make Thunderbird Little League a success. The volunteer help of the player's parents and others who are interested in our program is essential. The countless hours that are unselfishly given by these volunteers go a long way toward making our boys and girls into outstanding young citizens.
