What is the US Youth Soccer ODP – Minnesota?

image006.jpgThe Minnesota US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP) is a program that offers supplemental training and a competitive opportunity to the best identifiable talent in certain birth years. ODP is not an alternative to club play. All ODP players play for an MYSA club. Teams, or pools, of players are selected within their particular birth years to train together under specially selected age group coaches. Then the strongest identifiable talent for each birth year is invited to attend a US Youth Soccer ODP Regional Showcase representing Minnesota.

ODP Information:  The MYSA's Olympic Development Program begins with the District Select – ODP program in the fall for the three youngest age groups (2002, 2003, 2004).  The initial player identification phase begins with the district select fall and spring festivals (2002, 2003, 2004) and ODP Identifications in April (1999, 2000, 2001).  A pool of players is announced on the second Friday in May.

The pools will have eight training sessions in May and June.  Players can also be added to the pool, at any time, through the scouting of games with the approval of the State Director of Coaching. The training sessions are held on Sunday nights to minimize conflicts with other soccer activities the players may have.

ODP Weekend held the second weekend of June consisting of four sessions is an opportunity to train and play twice on Saturday and Sunday to aid in the preparation for the Regional Showcase.

Not every state pool player attends every event.  The teams are identified by the ODP coaches the week of June 6th for the first two events.

·        Regional Showcase, Dayton Ohio (1999-2003) June 26-30, 2016

·        Development Camp, Dekalb, Illinois (2004) July 8-11, 2016

·        Winter Training, Minneapolis, MN (2000-2004) November 2016/January 2017

·        International trip, Costa Rica (2000/2001) March 11-19, 2017

All events are priced separately and the budget is based on costs such as transportation, hotels, meals, coaches, etc.  The camp can range from $500 - $800.  We try to keep the costs as low as possible for the players.  Where necessary, MYSA will provide financial assistance to players capable of advancing beyond the state level. http://www.mnyouthsoccer.org/page/show/680954-odp

Additional Selection Opportunities

image011.jpgA player, who did not register and attend an identification date, can be scouted or brought into Pool Training Session for a one-time evaluation. In order for a player to be scouted, or granted an invitation for an alternative tryout, the State Director of Coaching and Player Development must be contacted.

·        A recommendation can come from any soccer coach within the community: high school coach, club coach, club DOC, etc.

·        The recommendation must include the club, age, player jersey number and name, phone number and e-mail address of the recommending coach.

·        This letter must be dated and signed by the coach.

Once the recommendation has been received by the State Director of Coach and Player Development, the player will either be scouted while playing with his/her team or the player will be contacted with an official invitation to attend a pool training session.

·        The player will be contacted within 48 hours of the session if the age group coaches would like to add the player to the pool or not.
