Pateadores Alumni Maurice Edu managed to score for both Rangers and Valencia in a 1-1 Champions League draw on Wednesday. Rangers FC remain unbeaten and hold the critical second spot in Group C behind Manchester United.
Edu, playing like the man of the match, leaped to head in Vladimir Weiss’s corner to give the Scottish champions the lead after 34 minutes.
However, only a minute into the second half, Edu equalized with an "own goal" by glancing a header into his own net from Valencia's Tino Costa’s free kick.
"The first goal I didn’t have time to celebrate because I took a knock on the head and was laid on the ground for a while,” Edu said. “The own goal, I saw it late and the next thing I know it hit me and it was in.”
"I went through all the emotions. There was obvious excitement at scoring the goal and then a real down point when the own goal went in. But I felt the team did well. We created a lot of chances and with a bit of luck we would have won the game, " Edu said.
The "bit of luck" referred to by Edu was the fact that he also hit the post in the game. Never one to avoid the physical side of the game, Edu was also booked for a late challenge on Mehmet Topal.
“I think everybody is excited about being in the Champions League. It’s the biggest competition there is at club level and hopefully we can advance from the group stage," Edu said.
The midfielder played at the University of Maryland for three years, earning All-American honors in his junior season. When he went pro, Edu signed with MLS as a Generation Adidas player and was selected first overall by Toronto FC in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft. He was 2007 MLS Rookie of the Year, and since 2008 has played for Rangers of the Scottish Premier League.
Edu scored his first international goal versus the Czech Republic on May 25, 2010. He raised his global profile when his 85th minute apparent winner was controversially disallowed during the USA vs. Slovenia 2-2 draw at the World Cup in South Africa. “I was honored and felt privileged to have been part of the squad at the World Cup in the summer and it’s definitely an experience I will never forget."
