First Base Training Clinic with
Coach Russ Joseph
About the Clinic: This clinic will be conducted over 3 weeks and is free to all athletes. Each lesson will be offered twice on 3 consecutive Saturdays. Each session will build on the skills learned in the previous session. Players should participate in all 3 clinics to sharpen their skills for the upcoming season. The clinics will be taught by Russ Joseph, former coach of St. John’s Episcopal School and current CAPO Girls Softball Umpire in Chief.
What is Covered:
Fielding grounders at first base and beating the runner to the bag
Stretching with the correct foot every time, stretching at the right time
Defending against the bunt
Getting the out at 1st and then getting the next out
Backing up the pitcher at the plate on passed balls
Taking charge of the “Pickle”
Learning the priorities on Pop-Up coverage
Understanding the white and orange base
Avoiding obstruction calls at first base
Location: Cooks Park
When: The three Saturday sessions will be on January 18th, January 25th, and February 1st at the times stated below.
