Training The Mind

FC Portland is going to start to develop the mindset of its players. We are going to create a You v’s Yourself mentality. Make sure have a pen and paper on hand when listening to this. Listen to this video and then answer the questions below.

https://youtu.be/BSfdFnHwAQo

1. Listening to Bill Beswick, what three things (or more) stick out in your mind?
2. Can you relate anything that Bill said from your own environment? What are they?
3. We all make mistakes. This is one thing that we can guarantee. When I made a mistake, I moved on from that mistake by apologizing to my team-mates. This helped me to make sure my next action was a positive one (apologizing) Think of a way you can ‘reset’ your positive thoughts after making a mistake. What would you do?
4.Imagine there was such a thing as ‘The perfect plater’. How would the perfect player react to these situations?

• Dealing with poor form –

• Making mistakes –

• Dealing with poor calls from officials –

• Being a goal down –

• Being a goal up –

• Mistakes by team-mates –

• Constructive coaching –

• Starting on the bench –

• Criticism from a team-mate –

• The ‘Big game’ -

Thursday

Outfield players -  https://youtu.be/oC9NIqqX5Tw

Station A – Dribble the ball in a figure 8 motion. 1 Use right foot only 2. Use left foot only.  3. Use both feet.

Station B – Dribble in and out of cones. When you get to the middle cone, move to the left or right.

Station C -  Dribble into the smaller square, perform a scissor move or step over and then explode out of the inner square.

Station D – Dribble to the middle cone and turn to your left or right.

***At each station, work for 30 seconds and rest for 30 seconds. Do 5 minutes at each station.***

Friday

20 min – Fast footwork

https://youtu.be/gt_8BAWnUI8

20 – 40. Step-overs - Set up a Y-shape course. It’s important once you perform the step-over that you accelerate through one of the gates. See videos:

https://youtu.be/LPvXR0lq3tM

Goalkeepers – Move to the middle cone, throw a high ball to the gate then go and catch the ball at the highest point. Knee out for protection and shout ‘Keepers!’

40 – 60. Juggling. Beat your record!

Goalkeeper juggling – 2 balls. Hold one ball in both hands. The other ball has to be kept off the floor by slightly hitting it into the air. See how many you can do.

Day Off

Sunday

Sunday -  Watch this game:

UCLA v Stanford College Women's Soccer 2017

https://youtu.be/g7itIgIk6F4

Watch the game and analyze what happens. Look at players that play the position you play. See how they attack, defend, recover from mistakes.

Or watch this game:

Men's Soccer - ACC Championship - Clemson vs Virginia

https://youtu.be/QFEkqffrZ8E

What I look for when the game starts -  The first thing I generally look for is the shape of the team that we’re playing against and how they’re set up. Are they playing a back 3 or back 4? What are their numbers in midfield and what’s that shape in midfield? How many lines are there to that team, is it a 4-3-3 but it’s set up more like a 4-1-4-1 where there’s four lines. Those types of things are the first thing that I look at and really the most obvious initially. Next is what that shape looks like in attack and in defense, so how open is it when they have the ball. Are they spread from sideline-to-sideline? Is there a lot of space from front to back or is it a more condensed team?

Same thing defensively, what does that shape look like? Does it change after they have attacked and they’ve lost the ball? So those are some of the first things and most obvious things that you can see in the first few minutes of the game. I then look at areas to exploit. Where are the oppositions weaknesses? I also look for any game changers in the opposition. Game changers are called this for a reason. If we can nullify the game changer, then we have an even better chance of winning the game. Watch the game with a pen and paper and take notes on what you see. Understanding the game will help enhance your own soccer skills and knowledge. You can also lead your team by sharing the knowledge you have.

Good luck!
