April 29, 2018 - Charlie Monaco Sportsmanship Award Winners
Two special awards were presented in honor of Charlie Monaco at the 25th Anniversary of the Glastonbury Hartwell Spring Warm-Up Soccer Tournament last weekend. The two teams, selected from 210 teams overall, demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and respect for the rules of the game and for their opponents.
Glastonbury Hartwell Soccer Club was founded in 1973 by Charlie Monaco, and was named for Verie "Bud" Hartwell who was the Glastonbury High School Soccer coach for many years. Bud was Charlie and Dave Monaco's coach. Soccer board meetings were held in Charlie Monaco's family room and Charlie was president, coach and a licensed referee.
We were very fortunate to have the Monaco family present at the tournament including Charlie's wife, Doris, who presented the award in honor of her late husband to one of the teams. The awards were given to the Glastonbury Girls U9 Blizzard and CFC Valley 05 Sky Girls teams.
