What is the Royal Oak Youth Soccer Association or ROYSA?

The Royal Oak Youth Soccer Association or ROYSA is a non-profit 501C(3) organization that has been serving the Royal Oak community for 40 years.  ROYSA is the 3rd largest club in the state of Michigan and provides a recreational program as well as the Renegades premier program.  ROYSA has approximately 2000 players each year, and ROYSA is committed to providing a positive soccer experience for our families.

What advantages does playing for ROYSA and the Renegades offer?

Since ROYSA is a true non-profit, ROYSA can focus on what is best for our players and their development and not what makes the most money for the club.  For those that want to play premier or travel soccer, playing for the Renegades is approximately ONE HALF of the cost of the typical travel or premier program and ROYSA still provides paid certified coaches and has an accomplished Director of Coaching or DOC, but ROYSA has no profit motive.

All of our Renegades coaches from U7-U14 are paid, professional coaches. They are certified, regularly evaluated, and have achieved significant accomplishments. To read more about the Renegades coaches, click here:

On the recreation side, ROYSA parent coaches volunteer their time because they love soccer and helping children.  The parent coaches receive training and support from ROYSA, including free Coaching Clinics put on by our DOC and age specific training programs that can be downloaded to help facilitate practices.

Finally, as a community organization, your child will have fun.  Many of our players will play together for years and develop long lasting friendships.  Many players will go to the same elementary school or meet up again in middle school and high school where their soccer friendships will immediately benefit them.

When does the season start?

For recreational teams, ROYSA has a spring and fall season.  Each recreational team plays 8 to 10 games (depending on the age level) each season.  The number of games for the Renegades depends on the league in which the team plays.  For the ROYSA recreational teams, the Spring Season typically starts in mid-April and ends the first week in June.  Fall season games usually start the first week after Labor Day and conclude at the end of October.  After registration has concluded, and you have been assigned a team, your coach will send you a game schedule.

What day are practices and games and where are they held?

Before the season, your coach will contact you to let you know what days and time you will practice and where your practices will be held.  When game schedules are finalized, your coach will also provide you a games schedule.  All practice days, times and locations are set by your coach, and he or she will contact you with this information.  For recreational teams, there is usually 1 or 2 practices per week and games held on either Saturday or Sunday with the occasional week night game. Maps and directions to game fields are on the web site under Club Info.

Who are the Renegades?

The Renegades are the premier or travel arm within ROYSA and are offered in the U7 thru U19 age divisions for both boys and girls.  The Renegades program is committed to competing at the highest levels of the game and our focus continues to be that we enhance our program and develop each player within our club to their highest potential.  The Renegades pride themselves on being a top-notch program while providing exceptional value.

Renegades’ players are very committed and benefit professional training.  As your child progresses into the U13 and above level, he or she may have the opportunity to compete in games at the highest levels, not only in the metro Detroit area, but across the state.

Please click on the Renegades tab on the web site to learn more.

I am interested in coaching for ROYSA--what do I do?

ROYSA is always looking for volunteer coaches in the recreational divisions.  Please let us know if you are interested in this very important and rewarding position. The coaches are vital to ROYSA’s success and you do not have to be an experienced coach with a coaching certificate to get involved with a recreational team. The parent coaches receive training and support from ROYSA, including free Coaching Clinics put on by our DOC and age specific training programs that can be downloaded to help you run practices. Please contact [email protected] if you are interested.

What equipment do I need to buy for my child?

Every player needs a soccer ball. Soccer balls come in 3 sizes, 3, 4, and 5.  Children playing in U5, U6, and U7 use a size 3 ball.  Children playing recreational soccer in U8 also use a size 3.   Renegade players in U8 use a size 4 ball.  Players in U9, U10, U11 and U12 use a size 4 ball.  Players in U13 and older use a size 5.  All players MUST have shin guards at all practices and games.  Soccer cleats are recommended for players in U5 and above. You should also get soccer socks and players should bring a water bottle to all practices and games.

How much does it cost to play for a ROYSA recreational team or the Renegades?

The cost to play for one of ROYSA’s recreational teams varies by division.  The specific cost can be found under the Recreational tab of the web site and the Age Division sub tab and then clicking on your specific age group.  This cost includes a team jersey, but to keep costs down, at the end of the fall season your jersey is returned to your coach for you to reuse in the spring season.  At the end of the spring season, your child gets to keep his jersey.

Since ROYSA is a non-profit, the cost to play for the Renegades is substantially less than the cost charged by for-profit clubs and non-profits that pay salaries to board members and officers.  The fees for the Renegades season can be located in the Tryout Guide.

Please call Blue Sombrero directly and have them change it for you.  Blue Sombrero Parent Support Line at 866-258-330 (select the correct option).  ROYSA does not want to handle anyone's credit card information, and ROYSA does not have access to this information.  You can also change your credit card information on the Blue Sombrero website.

What do we do if we have a game and it's raining?

Games are played rain or shine. Games will be suspended for thunder and/or lightning.  If we get an excessive amount of rain, and the fields become unplayable, we will cancel games.  Please check the ROYSA Field Status link on the homepage or under Club Info/Game Fields to see if your field has been closed--in which case your game is cancelled.  Your coach may also contact you if this happens.

I'm a Rec coach, how do I reschedule a game?

  • Contact the opposing coach using Head Coach Contact List found on the ROYSA web site under the Recreational Soccer tab.
  • Agree upon a new date and time for the game using the field availability lists found on the ROYSA web site or info provided by SOCS/BBSC.
  • Once the game time and field is agreed upon, BOTH coaches must e-mail [email protected] requesting the game change – please make sure to reference your game number (found on the schedule) in your email.
  • Please provide at least a week in advance notice of any rescheduled games; this allows the scheduler to advise the ref scheduler so refs are canceled/rescheduled as well.
