Players born in or before 2008 - Sunday, July 28th, through Thursday, August 1st

Players born in 2009 through 2011 - Sunday, July 14th, and Monday, July 15th

Tryout Information

Registration opens in mid-June.

After assessments you will receive an email with your team placement. You will have 48 hours to accept your spot on the team. To accept, you will click ACCEPT and complete registration. You will have the option of paying in installments or in full. You are then considered registered with Tonka United. If you want to decline your team placement, then you will initially click ACCEPT and then NO.

When you first register, you will pay a $50 non-refundable assessment fee (whether or not you attend). This fee is figured into the overall registration fees and is not an additional fee. Once you accept your spot on a team, you will then pay an additional fee to complete the registration process.

Overview

U11 and U12 players at Tonka United can participate in two different competitive soccer programs, the Academy program or the Select program. U13 and Older Players at Tonka United can participate in three different competitive soccer programs: the Elite program, the Academy program, or the Select program. Placement in these programs is based on a player assessment that takes place each July/August. Our goal at Tonka United is to give our families and players a great soccer experience by placing players at suitable levels for success. All of our competitive programs focus on teaching players how to train and play, with an emphasis on creating skilled soccer players through the mastery of technique and decision-making.

Elite Program (U13 and U14)

Teams will compete in the TCSL National Level or MYSA Premier League (C1 level at U13-U14). Teams will participate in State Cup, US Club/USYS Regionals, and selected College Showcases. Travel on the National and Regional level. Requires a higher level of time and financial commitment. The focus of this program is to prepare and teach players how to train and play at the highest levels in Region II and nationally. 

  • Professional Coaches on all teams
  • Fall Season for U13-U14 teams, starts mid August and runs through mid-October
  • Winter Training for all teams, November thru March (4 weeks off)
  • Spring Season begins April thru mid-July (2 weeks off)
  • Player Development Curriculum and Meso-cycle training plan provided
  • Player Development Plans
  • College Advisor provided

Academy Level

U11 and U12 players compete at the National/Regional Level or C1/C2 - the highest levels in Minnesota leagues TCSL or MYSA. Teams will participate in top-level regional events, competitive winter league or events, and selected local tournaments. Requires a higher level of time and financial commitment. The focus of this program is to prepare and teach players how to train and play at the highest levels in Minnesota and Regionally.

  • Will train in the Academy Pool (20-24 kids)
  • Teams tiered Academy 1 and Academy 2
  • Professional Head Coaches
  • Fall training begins mid-August and runs through mid-October
  • Winter training begins November and runs through March (4 weeks off)
  • Spring season begins April thru mid-July (2 weeks off)
  • Player Development Curriculum provided, with oversight of Age Group Director
  • Emphasis on developing players through challenging game-like situations that demand good possession habits

U13 and U14 Blue teams will compete in the National/Regional Level (TCSL), or C1 (MYSA) League. Will participate in Presidents Cup, regional tournaments, and selected College Showcases. Requires a higher level of time and financial commitment. The focus of this program is to prepare and teach players how to train and play at the highest levels in Minnesota.

  • Professional Coaches on all teams
  • Fall season starts mid August and runs through mid-October
  • Winter training for all teams, November through March (4 weeks off)
  • Spring Season begins in April and runs through mid-July (2 weeks off)
  • Player Development Curriculum and Meso-cycle training plan provided
  • Player Development Plans

Select Level

Players compete at the Cities/State Level or C2/C3 in League. Teams will participate in local tournaments - with an occasional fun overnight tournament within the region (Duluth/Wisconsin Dells, etc). 

  • Will train in a pool with other select teams (when possible)
  • Teams Tiered - Blue (U11 and U12), White, and Red (lowest level)
  • Professional Coaches and/or parent volunteer
  • Fall Season begins mid-August and runs through October
  • Winter practices/training sessions provided (U13 and U14 red teams - no winter training)
  • Spring season begins in April and runs through mid-July
  • Player Development Curriculum provided, with oversight of Age Group Director

  • Current Augsburg University Men's Soccer Assistant Coach
  • 8 years of college coaching experience (Hamline and Augsburg)
  • 9 years of high school experience (Hill-Murray, Mounds View, Minneapolis South)
  • 3 year Director of Coaching at Southeast Soccer Club
  • 3 year U9/10 Director at Maplebrook Soccer Association
  • Former 2x All-MIAC and All Region Player at the University of St. Thomas; played in the NPSL with MN Twinstars
  • Current U11 Academy 1 Coach
