General Recreational Soccer Information 

The purpose of the Tonka United Soccer Association (TUSA) rec program is to provide an opportunity for young players and their families to have fun while learning about soccer. TUSA operates independently of the Hopkins/Minnetonka Rec and Chanhassen Park & Rec, under the support and direction of the TUSA Board with the help of a full-time Director of Operations, Director of Coaching and Rec Director. General Information

Registration: Each year, registration opens Mid January - March 1st (approximate). Pre-School registration is open through April (because of later start date).

Start of Season is late April and runs through June. 

Coaches:  All of our coaches are volunteers. Coaches will receive their rosters approximately 2 weeks before the season begins, usually around the end of March.  

Schedules:  Schedules will be posted on the website Mid April.

Kick-off Week: The purpose is to help prepare coaches and teams for the upcoming season. Pre-Kindergarten and 1st Grade teams will work with a Tonka United trainer (coaches are expected to attend). Teams and players will run through fun games and activities and end in a full-field scrimmage.  2nd-12th grade will have scrimmages on their game nights.  Coaches are expected to be there to assist Tonka United Staff coaches to get games started.

Games: The season consists of 9 - 10 games and concludes with a league tournament, the Tonka Blast, the last Saturday in June.  Games are typically played one night per week. Tonka Kickers -Kindergarter grade play their games at St. Therese and 2nd-12th grade play at Freeman Park in Shorewood.  Minnewashta Elementary is also used as a back-up.

• Game Times for Tonka Kickers Coed are 5:30. 
• Games (Pre Kindergarten-Kindergarten) are 5:30 and 6:45 pm.
• Games (1st Grade-HS) are 5:45 and 7:15 pm.

Game Locations

• Monday Games will not be played on Memorial Day. 
• If we have an increased number of registrants or have field issues will the Game Nights be subject to change.
• HOME team wears BLUE.
• AWAY team wears RED.

Practices: Teams are responsible for setting up their own practice schedule and location 1x per week throughout the season (optional). Practices are held at local parks and schools, usually within the Hopkins and Minnetonka School District areas.  

Team Selection: Registration is based on the grade the child is currently enrolled in (If your child is in 1st grade - register him as 1st grade). Players may designate ONE friend with whom they would like to play. That friend MUST request your child as well to be honored. There are NO multiple requests accepted. Teams are then formed by gender, grade and school whenever possible.  We try to keep schoolmates together; however, we cannot always accommodate these requests due to the large number of players that participate in our program as well as the varying numbers of kids for each grade and school.

Players will be notified of their team at least two weeks prior to the start of the season by his/her coach.

Volunteers: We are always in need of volunteers to fulfill the following positions: coaches, assistant coaches, team managers, and assistance with the Tonka Blast.  If you are interested in volunteering, please complete the online Volunteer Registration found on our website after completing your child’s registration. Picture Days:  Individual and Team picture are typically scheduled for the second or third Saturday in May. Schedule will be posted on the website.

Summer Tonka Kickers (coed) Program - Introduction to Soccer League:

This program is for our youngest players age 4!

• Seven-game season runs Tuesday evenings -  Mid May - June 
• Registration Open Mid January  - end of March or until full
• Must be 4 years old by September 1st.
• Teams will be coed and are coached by parent volunteers
• Tonka United Recreational Trainers will be on each field to help team parent coaches
• A pregame skills activity (15 min) will take place prior to league 4x4 game (ie: Mud Monsters & other fun games)
• Games will consist of two 10 minute halves of running time
• No additional practices
• Cost: $80 (includes Play United T-shirt)

Summer Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten (Current Grade):

Teams will be formed - parent coaches needed!
A pregame skills activity will take place prior to league 4x4 game (ie: Mud Monsters & other fun games)
Games will consist of four 8 minute quarters
No referees. Assistant coaches/parent volunteer will monitor time
Parent volunteers will be needed to coach teams for games and practices
Games will be played at St. Therese in Deephaven

Summer 1st Grade - High School (Current Grade):

Teams will be formed - parent coaches needed!
Games consist of two 25 minute halves
1st/2nd Grade - 5v5
3rd-7th Grade - 7v7
Referee will be present
Parent volunteers will be needed to coach during games and practices
Games will be played at Freeman Park in Shorewood

Tonka Kickers Coed (Includes t-shirt)     $80    
Pre-Kindergarten                                    $105

A $30 late fee applies after registration closes on February 27th.

Uniforms

All uniforms will be ordered online directly. 
Sample sizes are available to try-on at Tonka United office and General Sports anytime during office hours.

Other Important Information

At TUSA, we play small-sided games to give players an opportunity to get more "touches on the ball". All players should play about the same amount of time in each game and should have an opportunity to play in each position. This is a NO score, NO standings, NO protest league.This rule applies to coaches, parents, players and spectators.
