BETTERBALL!

What I Learned at BETTERBALL! the week of June 24-28

How to improve my footwork, dribbling skills, and shooting techniqueI learned the fundamentals of basketball and many new drills to improve in the following areas.

  • Jump-stop and pivot
  • Speed up, Slow down
  • Dribble knee high or waist high with Dribble Tag or The PacMan Dribble Game
  • Three reasons why I miss my shot:  rhythm (just not ready to shoot the ball), legs (when I miss short or long), follow-throw (when I miss right or left)
  • Shooting games:  Great Alaskan Shootout, Foul Shooting, Buzzer Beaters, 5 Spot Layups, Team Hot Shots, Team Transition Drill

How to be a better teammate and to be effective even when I don't score. I learned how to pass to open teammates, set screens and move without the ball.

  • Step and Slide on defense…use my whole body to play defense including my mouth by talking to my teammates about how we can work together to stop the offense from scoring
  • Pass and catch with two hands…choose the right pass for the right situation, either the bounce pass, the chest pass, or the overhead pass
  • A good screen starts with a hop stop, wide feet, protect yourself, and stand still so your teammate can use your body to get open
  • Never let a teammate get up off of the floor by him/herself…”Help ‘em up!”
  • Cut to the basket…Fill a spot…Screen for your teammate…Run to the Rim to Rebound!

How to take the lessons I learn on the court and apply them to all areas of my lifeI learned that who I surround myself with and the habits that I develop will contribute to my success on and off the court. Every morning, I listened to Coach Cloran’s Words of Wisdom because character counts at BETTERBALL! and in life.

  • Monday “Never rest until your good is better and your better is best"
  • Tuesday “You become like the 5 people you spend the most time with...choose carefully!”
  • Wednesday “Play Hard! Play Smart! Play Together!”
  • Thursday "Successful people make a habit of doing the things that unsuccessful people don’t like to do!”
  • Friday “The only person you should try to be better than today is the person you were yesterday!”

Other Camp Highlights

  • Daily Swimming in Notre Dame’s amazingly beautiful outdoor pool
  • The BETTERBALL! Snak Shak
  • The fun BETTERBALL! mini-ball giveaway

  • Special Guest, Coach Jim Rullo, Head Coach from Neumann University
