FAQs

A few of the most frequently asked questions about the recreational soccer program.

How old does my son or daughter have to be to play soccer?

In order to play in our instructional league, your son or daughter should turn 5 during the calendar year. Please refer to “Age Groups” for further information.

How do I register my son or daughter to play soccer?

There are two soccer seasons - spring and fall. Registration for the fall season occurs in May and June. Spring registration will take place in December and January.  Exact dates, times and locations will be posted on the website, on our hotline and through signage within the district. Residents must register online by accessing our soccer web site located at http://www.kingssoccer.org/.

What age group will my child play in this year?

Please refer to “Age Groups” for the divisions and the age groups that make up these divisions.

What type of equipment will my son or daughter need?

Each player should have a ball (6U,8U - Size 3), (10U,12U - Size 4), (14U and above - Size 5), a water bottle, shin-guards, a pair of soccer cleats or gym shoes and a pair of athletic shorts.  Kings Soccer will provide a team jersey and a pair of soccer socks.

How are players assigned to teams?

Players are assigned to a team via a blind draw in accordance with SAY guidelines. Players that are the sons or daughters of the head coach or the assistant coach can be held out of the draw and assigned to the team that their father or mother will coach. Also, siblings can be marked so they are assigned to the same team. Each team must have a balance between the 2 age groups that comprise a team. For example, there must be roughly an equal number of second and third graders on a U10 team. For U10 and older, we try to keep a core group of players together from spring to spring and fall to fall.

How long do the games last?

6U Instructional - 4 eight minute quarters
8U – 4 ten minute quarters
10U- 4 twelve minutes quarters
12U- 4 fifteen minute quarters
14U- 4 fifteen minutes quarters
16U- 4 twenty minute quarters

Can my son/daughter play recreational soccer and select soccer at the same time?

Yes, SAY rules permit players participating in a Select league to also participate in SAY recreational teams.

How much does it cost to play soccer?

It costs $110.00 to play Kings Recreational soccer with a maximum of $330 per family.

How old do you have to be to be a Referee?

You must be at least 13 years of age.

What is "Offside"? (Straight from the FIFA Laws of the Game!) http://www.fifa.com/

Offside is only enforced in U10 and older age groups! Offside Position It is not an offense in itself to be in an offside position. A player is in an offside position if: • he is nearer to his opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second last opponent A player is not in an offside position if: • he is in his own half of the field of play or • he is level with the second last opponent or • he is level with the last two opponents Offense A player in an offside position is only penalized if, at the moment the ball touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee, involved in active play by: • interfering with play or • interfering with an opponent or • gaining an advantage by being in that position No Offense There is no offside offense if a player receives the ball directly from: • a goal kick or • a throw-in or • a corner kick

I would like to coach soccer - how do I sign-up?

Any resident of the Kings School District can sign-up to coach a soccer team as long as they are 18 years or older. You can sign-up to be a coach by indicating on the Registration Form or send an e-mail to one of the soccer coordinators. Please indicate whether you would like to be a head coach or an assistant coach. The District Soccer coordinators are then responsible for assigning coaches to the various teams and typically contact those people who have been selected to coach several weeks before the season. You do not have to have prior soccer coaching or playing experience to coach - just a willingness to learn and a commitment to have fun with the team.

What is the difference between Recreational and Select soccer?

Recreational soccer is open to any player who signs up within the time constraints imposed by the individual soccer league. There are no try-outs or "cuts" in recreational soccer. Most recreational soccer leagues, including SAY, mandate a minimum amount of playing time (2 quarters for SAY) for each player. Participation on select or "club" teams, on the other hand, is based on try-outs and do not have rules regarding minimum playing time.
