“Change is in the air” at Blount United or at least that’s the opinion of numerous coaches and volunteers of the Maryville youth sports club.  The 20-year old club this spring finished one of its most successful tryout and recruitment windows in over a decade and has plans to invest over $150,000 during this summer on facility upgrades.  A new concession and restroom pavilion and some other improvements to the six soccer fields at the Vulcan Soccer Park on South Court Street are among the plans Blount United hope to complete before September.

Director of coaching and club co-founder, Garth Kupritz feels the upgrades and the success in recruitment are a combination of factors.   “We’ve had a good run of strong coaches, and our youth academy (for aged 4-7 children) has been very successful over the past few years.  It’s been a driving factor of building great teams earlier.”

“We are a bit of a Goldilocks club; not too big and not too small.” says longtime coach and team manager, Charles West.   “These investments will keep Blount United on firm footing for the next 20 years.”

The new concession pavilion, to be located adjacent to Field 6, will provide restrooms, a small covered picnic area, and serve as a central meeting place with concessions and tournament check-in included.

Other plans include field improvements and the creation of “Field Zero”: a new 7 v 7 -sized field to host the Blount United Academy on the far south side of the complex.

The bulk of the renovations should be completed by the fall of 2019.  The construction is to be performed by Joseph Construction Company.  The Vulcan Soccer complex is a 20 acre parcel of land provided by the Vulcan Materials company  (NYSE: VMC)  since the early 1990’s to offer Blount County youth competitive soccer facilities.
