Director of Coaching

Garth Kupritz, BUSC Director of Coaching

   Garth Kupritz has a background rich in soccer experience.  Garth played for several teams in his native country, South Africa, including Balfour Park Soccer Club under the direction of Tony Macedo of Fulham fame. His teammates included; Richard Gough, future Dundee United Cpt., Glasgow Rangers Cpt., and Scottish National Team captain, as well as, Mich d'Avray, future Ipswich player of the English Premier League, South Africa's U-23 coach, and currently managing at Perth Glory in Australia. Kupritz played under the direction of Alex Forbes (217 games for Arsenal) on the Southern Transvall U-19 team and also represented Southern Transvaal in the Currie Cup in 1980, the biggest amateur national tournament in the country.  Garth was a member of the South African Gold Medalist Team at the Macabi Games, held every four years in Israel, in 1981.

   Kupritz left South Africa in 1981 for college in the United States. He joined the San Diego State University team and was a four year starter from 1982-1985 for the Aztecs, under the direction of Coach Chuck Clegg. At mid-season in 1982, Garth's freshman year, SDSU was ranked #1 in the country. Teammates at SDSU included future USA World Cup players, Cle Kooiman, Chris Sullivan (now a soccer announcer on Fox Sports Channel), and Kevin Crowe.

   After playing in college, Garth was appointed Co-Head Coach at San Diego Community College, a Junior College, from 1987-1989. While there, his team was second in their league both years. In addition to coaching at the collegiate level, Kupritz also was a coach with Alan Meeder at The Soccer Academy, a Western United States soccer camp circuit, as well as the Soccer Camp Director and Owner for the Savannah Soccer Academy. After moving to Maryville, Tennessee with his wife and daughters, Garth co-founded and became the Director of Coaching at Blount United Soccer Club. Kupritz runs weekly skills training sessions for players and team camps during the summer months.

   Garth lives in Maryville with his wife, Virginia (professor at University of Tennessee) and has two daughters, Genevieve, an accomplished track and field athlete formerly at East Tennessee State University, and Ariel Kupritz, who played soccer for the University of Tennessee Lady Vols and recently graduated.
